Is it just me... by djdannyp on 09-26-2008 at 12:57 AM

...or does the read/unread property of sub-forums update strangely?

Basically, what I do during my course of browsing the website:

>Open the main page
>Look down which sub-forums are showing as "unread"
>Open any given sub-forum with unread threads

Now, let's say for simplicity's sake that there's only one unread thread:

>Click on the unread thread
>Read the unread thread
>Click back on "Messenger Plus! Live Forums" at the top of the page

and now the previously unread thread still shows as unread.  the only way to prevent this is to add in the extra step of:

>Click on the unread thread
>Read the unread thread
>Click back to the sub-forum at the top of the page
>Click back on "Messenger Plus! Live Forums" at the top of the page

Now, is this intended behaviour.....or do I have some setting messed up

And if it is intended behaviour, is there any way to change it, or at least add an option to change it, as it's annoying to have to open unnecessary pages :P

I believe my forum has the same problem; but im not sure if its native behavior/default behavior.

Iit functioned correctly that sub-forums with new posts were blanked out once the thread(s) have been read then it would be just the same amount of work.  It'd just be clicking back on the main forum page instead of on the "Latest" page

I'm sure it could be fixed that you don't need to visit the actual sub forum page for the main page to realise that you've read all the new posts

I browse the site the same way and raised this issue with WDZ a while back in the shoutbox (a long while it's likely pruned by now) and he explained that this was because of the way that the forum checks for unread threads. It made sense and when I bought up another possible way to check he seemed to acknowledge the idea.... before doing nothing about it :chrongue:

But fair enough it would be a lot of effort to make a change with little result.

That's the intended behavior; you need to view the forum to have it automatically marked as read. Just viewing a thread won't do it because showthread.php doesn't look at the other threads in the forum to find out if any are unread. Doing that every time a thread is viewed wouldn't be very efficient. =/

MyBB 1.2 had the same limitation. 1.4 is supposed to fix it, but last I checked it was quite buggy. :p

Hmmm.... on my boards and 1.4 test boards is working correctly.

Indeed, be sure there are no unread threads on the forum, after then, then forum will be marked as read.
