Some quick thermal compound questions by Mike on 10-02-2008 at 03:49 PM

Then, how do you explain this?

The silver one contains more paste and is cheaper and the silicon once contains less paste and it's significantly more expensive.
Why?

Caution:
We do not recommend using Arctic Silver 5 on the older slot type Intel Xeon processors with large multiple square inch CPU to heatsink interfaces. The huge contact area and large gaps between the processor and the heatsink require a thermal pad or thick mesh-reinforced paste. Arctic Silver 5 can be used on socket type Xeons without a problem.
Will it work on a mobile Intel Pentium III Tualatin?

This will work with all types of thermal compound, right?

Thanks :)

1. Silicon is a metal, not a ceramic.
2. Yes.

Aha, thanks :)

Looks like I got confused by the name :P

What about 3?

Don't bother with the cleaning compound. I use isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs to clean both sink and processor and works perfectly fine.

Oh yeah, and always use Arctic Silver kthx

Uh no. Silicon is not a metal?

As for 3, White Spirit is the common name for the best alcohol to clean this stuff with. Just don't get it on your hands...

Uh no. Silicon is not a metal?

"A tetravalent metalloid, silicon is less reactive than its chemical analog carbon."

So technically it's neither, but between metal and non-metals(as is the definition of metalloid)

Yes, which means it's not a metal. :)

Why not? I'd be more concerned about clothes tbh... It does nothing to skin (I use it to get paint off me at work... :p or petrol if it's gloss lol)

yeah, it really doesn't do much on skin.  i used a load of it when i got some metal paint on me last summer.  after 4 showers i was still covered in black patches so i figured that a more chemical based approach was needed :P

White Spirit is an irritant, it won't affect everyone but if you're susceptible to stuff like dermatitis/eczema it will.
