Severe WLM crash problem by gadi_sam on 10-21-2008 at 09:34 PM

I have a severe problem with Windows Live Messenger (Ver. 8.1, Windows XP SP2).  It keeps crashing all the time.  I chat with people, and suddenly it crashes and I have to login again.  Then it might crash a few seconds later, or it might be nice to me and let me chat for several minutes before it crashes again.  If I chat with several people and I close one of the chat windows - it automatically crashes.

Using Messenger this way is a real ordeal!

The error msg that it displays when it crashes is the regular Windows error msg, "Windows Live Messenger has encountered a problem and needs to close, we are sorry for the inconvenience".

I tried to uninstall and re-install it, but to no avail.  Installing a newer version hasn't solved the problem as well.  Removing cam driver didn't help.

I guess Messenger stores tons of information in the Registry, which is not erased when I uninstall it, and therefore uninstalling has no effect.

My guess is that what I need to do is "totally" remove Messenger from the Registry (incl. my contact list etc), and then to re-install it from the beginning.

Any idea how to do it?
Any other idea how to solve this problem?

This is a continuation question to the thread I opened yesterday on WLM crashes:

I just saw in one of the sticky threads in this forum the following tip, which refers specifically to Windows Vista:

Is Messenger Crashing?
If you are using Windows Vista, you may encounter crashes if you don’t have the latest version of Adobe Flash installed. You can install the latest version of Adobe Flash at http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download....Flash&promoid=BIOW.

Any chance that my crashes (in Windows XP) are caused by the same problem? if so, which link should I use to install the latest version of Adobe Flash for XP?

Hello Vilkku,

Thank you for your reply.
I've just installed the newest version of Adobe Flash Player from the link that you gave me, but the problem is still there.

So I still need HELPPPPP!

What about updating to 8.5?

Just upgraded to 8.5 - so far so good...
Let's hope it doesn't crash anymore.
