RE: Champions League - Last 16 by Oxy on 12-19-2008 at 06:17 PM

I can see Porto, Barca, Man. U., Liverpool, Chelsea, Villarreal and lisbon winning those.

The home leg second will certianly help Rafa and Fergie.

whats the money on it been an all english final again ?

RE: Champions League - Last 16 by djdannyp on 12-19-2008 at 09:41 PM

Atlético Madrid - Porto
Lyon - Barcelona
Arsenal - Roma
Internazionale - Man. United
Real Madrid - Liverpool
Chelsea - Juventus
Villarreal - Panathinaikos
Sporting Lisbon - Bayern Munchen

Those are my tips.  might be controversial, but i don't want another all english final.....sure it's great for the country and reinforces the premier league as [one of] the best in the world...but i'd much prefer to see an english side go up against a foreign team....otherwise it's too much like a premier league game...and we get 10 of those a week!  It's hard to look past the English sides, as I don't get to see much from abroad...the Spanish teams are looking quite strong this year though, maybe a so-called 'weaker' team like atletico or villarreal could spring a surprise and reach the semis.  too tough to call a winner

I'll agree with the above.

Except for the Barca will win it.

Manchester United will win it I think. Playedd rubbish so far this season but the 2nd half of the footy season they always finish strong. Barca have been in good form and there gonna drop of a bit I feel

%50 barca will win it.%50 other teams... (:

Man Utd all the way again this year :)
Basilis: wtf? no poll like last year? :(
Add a poll already. Single choice. No multiple choices like last year :P

I don't know if this is right because there are posts of other members in this one. But why not make a new one when the Last 16 round is over and only 8 teams are left?

I almost agree with this list, though I think Lisbon and Roma will have very close games so it's hard to pick them as guaranteed winners. Arsenal do look too young and I don't rate them either (no way they will win the Premiership, for sure) but I wouldn't write them off - they can still have two great nights if Fabregas is fit and on fire. Same applies to Bayern Munich, on the night they could pull it out of the bag. I wouldn't want to call Liverpool as a shoe-in either.. Real Madrid are very capable. But, yeah, I am included to agree with Stigmata.
RE: Champions League - Last 16 by Basilis on 03-28-2009 at 04:07 PM

I updated the first post with the draw of the quarter finals
Here are my predictions:

Villarreal - Arsenal
Man. United - Porto
Liverpool - Chelsea
Barcelona - Bayern

RE: Champions League - Last 16 by RaPLeX on 03-28-2009 at 05:57 PM

Villarreal - Arsenal
Man. United - Porto
Liverpool - Chelsea
Barcelona - Bayern

barca will take this.. they are unstoppable

RE: Champions League - Last 16 by djdannyp on 03-29-2009 at 12:04 AM

Villarreal - Arsenal
Man. United - Porto
Liverpool - Chelsea
Barcelona - Bayern

I'm praying that history repeats iself and that Chelsea overcome Liverpool. Barca are looking unstoppable but I reckon they could struggle against Chelsea/Liverpool

United look unstoppable in the second half of the draw tho

a Man Utd-Barca final would be a joy to behold

5/8, I can live with that :P

It looks like arsenal have had a turn around in the league, but got quite lucky against porto. Tbf, it was a terrible game anyway.

Next Round:

Villarreal - Arsenal
Man. United - Porto
Liverpool - Chelsea
Barcelona - Bayern

When it comes around I'd put deffo bets on the Man U. L + C and V + A could go either way I think.

A cheeky bet would be on Bayern winning though. Could make a bit of money off that one.

Semis:

Man U - Arsenal
Barca - Liverpool

Final:

Liverpool - Man U.

Final would make for a cracking game if gerrard and torres are both fit.
RE: Champions League - Last 16 by Justin on 04-01-2009 at 12:17 AM

Villarreal - Arsenal
Man. United - Porto
Liverpool - Chelsea
Barcelona - Bayern

As for the semis (providing that the teams I've chosen will go through)

Manchester United - Arsenal
Chelsea - Barcelona

The final

Barcelona - Arsenal

RE: Champions League - Last 16 by Eddie on 04-01-2009 at 01:16 AM

Villarreal - Arsenal
Man. United - Porto
Liverpool - Chelsea
Barcelona - Bayern

Arsenal have been relatively weak all season and have underperformed, hence i dont think they will make it any further.
Manchester United are on a mission to redeem their recent form in the league, they will certainly win.
I am a chelsea fan however, we are performing under-par and liverpool are all guns firing, i think it will be tight but chelsea will lose.
And the final two, i no next to nothing about this year so cant make a decision (Y)

Arsenal haven't lost in 22 matches (with a number of injurys) and are still continuing their run. The majority have been draws yes, but they aren't losing. Fabregas, Eduardo, Adebayor and Walcott have come back from injury and should play in the match. The only problem Arsenal have is that Arshavin is cup-tied, but even without him I don't see Villareal winning.
They are still in the Champions League and the FA cup.

RE: Champions League - Last 16 by John Anderton on 04-11-2009 at 12:20 PM

Arsenal will take Villareal in the second leg so they'd be through.
United, hopefully can pull off what not other English club has done.. if anyone can do it, they can :)
Liverpool, imo are probably going to go out. Sad really. They've been playing well. If Chelsea score even a single goal, its over. The only way I can see Liverpool come back in is scoring early.
Barcelona are already through. Very few teams have squandered a 4-0 lead in the first leg of the knockout of the UCL.

The most interesting match imo now is the United - Porto one. Porto are favourites looking at their record but United just need a single goal shut out to go through. I know they are missing players but if anyone can do it, they can :)

Liverpool have a steep task up ahead and Bayern are out already tbh. Arsenal match is close as well but they should go through.

My SF predictions:
1) Arsenal vs Man. Utd.
2) Liverpool vs Barcelona

Winner of SF 1 will be the "away" team for the finals :)

RE: Champions League - Last 16 by Basilis on 04-30-2009 at 03:50 PM

After the first leg, I think Chelsea and Man. United are most likely to progress to the final.

I agree with you here, i don't think Chelsea will lose at the bridge, the UCL and FA Cup are our only realistic chances of a trophy this year, so i dont think we will lose it, and i can see us beating United if we reach the final together. Revengeeeeeeeeeeeee.
RE: .::Champions League 2009::. by Justin on 05-01-2009 at 11:24 AM

I still think Arsenal and Barcelona will go through. Arsenal have played very well at home in the Champions League this year (they haven't conceded a goal). I'm going for a 2-0 win. Barcelona to go through on penalties.

Ok, I got 3/4 correct :P
Now My guess will be Man Utd and Barca. I hope Chelsea win but I don't see it definitely happening. As for the United game, I think it will probably be a dull/exciting 0-0 or at max 0-1 for United :)

The Barca-Chelsea game will be close. Barca will push with their star studded line up and Chelsea will hold them back.. if Chelsea has to win, it would be either a typical Lampard goal, a counter (which is one of Lampard's things as well) or a set piece ('cause that's Barca's weakness) :)
Hopefully Chelsea won't let Barca "play their game" 'cause that can't be good for no one (except Barca) :)

4/4.....why thank you, lol.

I think United have enough of an upper hand to seal the deal now.  One goal at the Emirates leaves Arsenal needing 3...though on their day, that could easily happen

As for the other game....anything could happen.  I'd like Barcelona to edge it...I'm not a fan of same country finals for a number of reasons

The last Man Utd. vs Chelsea final was fun :P
I remember an AC Milan vs Inter (or was it Juve) final.. it sucked utter balls cause both of them played defensively and cancelled each other out.. 'twas totally boring (just like the Seria A imo :P)

Last year's finals on the other hand was exciting. EPL has a different kind of game, I agree. Especially if you're used to the (slower?) pace and (flamboyant at times?) style of the SPL. I still think the match was fun despite only 2 goals :)

It was Milan-Juventus and Milan won the cup with Shevchenko scoring the last penalty and giving Milan a 3-2 win. It was indeed a nasty game.

Yeah I remember everything about it except it being Juve :P I saw that match on tele. Just goes to show how much I thought it sucked :P

Anyway, Basilis, predictions for the second leg of the semis? :P
RE: .::Champions League 2009::. by Basilis on 05-03-2009 at 04:05 PM

I said some posts before yours that I think Chelsea and Man. Utd will progress.

RE: .::Champions League 2009::. by John Anderton on 05-07-2009 at 06:11 PM

Arsenal sucked big time. Big let down. I was expecting a good fight.
I'm a United fan but I have to say this.. the first half, I hated the way the ref gave away soft decisions in United's favour (like the free kick to Ronaldo where he scored in the 11th min)
The sending off of Fletcher was appalling.

As for the Chelsea match, I really think Chelsea drew the short straw. nimicitor said something about van de sar not being worked.. well, barca made only ONE shot on target.. which they scored. Cech made 0 saves :P
Chelsea imo deserved better. At least a couple of penalties. The Malouda one was contentious. The Drogba one in the first half should have been given.
But more than that, the two hand balls towards the end (around 85+ mins and 95-96min after Barca scored) should have both been given. So that's 3 penalties against them.
As for Abidal's sending off, he deserved to be sent off in the first half and a penalty be given to Chelsea. The time he was *actually* sent off he did nothing :P Two wrongs don't make a right but meh.. that's football.

So its going to be United vs. Barca. I pip United to win. Messi doesn't do well against English clubs.. most of the Barca players don't. (90+ goals between the 3 forwards and no goals for more than 210 mins :P 160+ goals in total by the team this year)
I feel the match is going to be sucky.
Barca 0-1 Manchester United.

Thanks ref for denying us a free flowing United vs Chelsea repeat.
Despite being a United fan, I would rather see a good match with Chelsea where we could lose than a sucky match with Barca where we mostly would win.

Btw, I know Barca are a great side in great form. They just totally suck against English clubs. They can't handle them. And iirc, both their full backs are suspended. Puyol should be back though.
So go figure :)
@Time: Any predictions? :P

RE: .::Champions League 2009::. by Eddie on 05-07-2009 at 06:32 PM

Not going to comment on the chelsea semi-final, i was highly unimpressed by the officiating of the match.

But i feel that Barca will win, because they seem to have pure dum luck with the officials.

RE: .::Champions League 2009::. by ixesha on 05-07-2009 at 07:56 PM

I'm going to assume that Thierry Henry will be fit for the final, despite the mysterious nature of his supposed injury.

In which case, I think Barcelona will win it. Fletcher missing.. that leaves their defensive midfield players lacking. That gives Iniesta and Xavi the space to orchestrate things with Messi (despite his lacklustre previous games) for a more potent attack. Man Utd could really show up on the day and spoil that but still.. the Premiership will begin to wear on even their depth. We shall see.

RE: .::Champions League 2009::. by Basilis on 05-07-2009 at 07:58 PM

I was watching the match and the moment I saw Essien not being able to send the ball of the box, I was sure that Barca would score. Unfortunately, they did. Only one shot on goal and they scored.

Last night's officiating reminded me a lot of some matches of Olympiacos, in which the officiating costed the team to not progress (I remember R. Carlos playing the role of the GK in front of the empty goal and both the referee Merk and the linesman had not "seen" it)

RE: .::Champions League 2009::. by John Anderton on 05-07-2009 at 08:01 PM

I believe Henry was fit last year when we had an extremely boring 0-0 + 1-0 (or was it a 0-1.. don't remember).
The only goal was a scorcher from Paul Scholes off a corner or something. But all in all considering the star line up of the two teams, the match was extremely boring.

Considering this will be one of the last matches I'll get to see on tele for a while, I certainly hope its really good :P

What can we say, shit happens :)
All part and parcel of the game. Sometimes decisions go your way, some times they don't. But when 4 clear penalty chances in one match don't go your way and you lose on away goals, you have a right to feel that you've been screwed over :P
Gotta move on, I guess :)

1-0 to United. 2-0 at max.. either way, I have a feeling it might be kinda boring :(
RE: .::Champions League 2009::. by John Anderton on 05-27-2009 at 06:14 PM

Match is to start in about 40 minutes..
I stand by what I said..

1-0 to United. 2-0 at max.. either way, I have a feeling it might be kinda boring :(

I see a high United winning probability (80% imo). 10% chance of Barca winning it in 90 minutes and 10% it goes to extra time.
If it goes to penalties, I have a feeling Barca has a 60-40 to win. United kinda fail at penalties imo :P

United have a good chance of scoring this year (despite the way last year's match went) simply because of the lack of first line defenders in Barca's team for the finals.
Time once said that due to Fletcher's absence, United's Defensive Midfield is a tad bit weak and might give rise to more midfield possession (thus match control) for Barca. This might be true.. but I'm sure Ferguson has something planned for it.
Also, imo, Central Midfield is where Chelsea dropped off.. they played too defensively allowing Barca to attack.. it almost worked (having 10 men in defence in 2 lines of 5 but its always risky :(

What do you guys think is going to happen? (assuming someone is here before the match :P)

EDIT: Found a stat here.. United have never lost in European Finals (that's something every United fan knows). But do they also know that every time, United was the "home" team. Hence every time they had their choice of jersey picking Blue, Red, and Red in 1968, 1999 and 2008 respectively.

This is the first time they have been drawn as the "away" team hence getting second choice of jersey. Barca is going with their Red/Blue stripe so United is going with White.

The last time Barca played a team in White they seems to have drubbed them 6-2 or something (just heard that in an interview). Ferguson replied "We're better than Real Madrid" :P
RE: .::Champions League 2009::. by Basilis on 05-27-2009 at 06:23 PM

RE: .::Champions League 2009::. by John Anderton on 05-27-2009 at 06:33 PM

These guys have too many breaks in India.. (its a sky sport's modded pre-game show which goes to most of Asia). I'm downloading the match and watching it again like last time if United win :P

I found the original Sky Sports pre-game is really good. It was about an hour and a half long and had tons of interviews :)

Just a note to people who missed the game. Fear not. Just go ahead and get it online :P

Iniesta and Xavi won the match for Barca. Messi was good.
This year's world player of the year is probably going to be Messi though honestly, I still think Ronaldo is better :) He didn't have a great day yesterday and iirc, Messi didn't have great games against Chelsea either.

Oh well, congrats to Barca :)

Really disappointed that United didn't win but it was a real master-class from Barca.

A front 3 boasting 97 goals was always gonna be a problem, definitely the midfield where the battle was lost...Anderson and Park just weren't up to it :(

99 at the end of the match :P Both Eto and Messi scored. Messi ended up with 38 or 39 odd goals. :)

His performance in the second leg against Bayern was scary..absolutely incredible
