speedstream 4200 by Pyro on 12-21-2008 at 07:11 AM

Now everybody has heard of the speed stream series; quite standard across the board with a selection of common problems..

I ask since its not the best modem.. is it possible to turn it or any modem into a simple web server. they all have a web management system; is it possible to put in your own. i believe they only have around 2.7MB of space but thats plenty for a simple HTML web server..

Does anyone know how it would be done? i have 4 speedstream 4200 series and would really like to get some small pages on them..

Thanks in advance for any help.

Not possible lol
Web Management is likely to be part of the Firmware of the modem.

but surely it wouldnt be hard to add in where the web files goto and direct ftp there. it already has the webserver. all u need is the www dir and its got ftp built in too. Would it be hard to mod the firmware in that way?

why would you put that much work into it though, just put a web server on your computer :p

While your reasoning about why it should be possible is sound, the practical difficulty is that there isn't any writable "hard disk" that you can gain access to and put a few files on.  You can only flash the entire firmware in one go, so you would have to first obtain some, then figure out how to modify and flash it without bricking the device. This might require finding and exploiting some security hole in the currently loaded firmware, because firmware images are often cryptographically signed and you shouldn't expect to be able to load your customized one through the normal process.  That's a lot of highly complicated work, which probably requires skills neither of us has.

As shawnz noted, you'd stand a much better chance with a router supported by OpenWRT.  With those, others have done all the homework, there is an existing customizable firmware code base and documented procedures for building your own.  I am not aware of any such project existing for Speedstream and I think we can safely say you are probably not going to be successful at doing this on your own -- of even if you are, it definitely won't be worth the time it will take.
