Error 8000401a - Windows Live Messenger 2009 (14.0.8050.1202) by -LiNk- on 12-21-2008 at 12:37 PM

Hi all,
can you help me with the last build of WLM 2009 (14.0.8050.1202)?
After installation, when I try to login Live Messenger shows me the error 8000401a "Signing in to Windows Live Messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."
I'm using Windows XP Professional, I don't have any firewall and my Antivirus is Eset NOD32; I have a wireless connection and WLM 2009 works fine on another pc connected to the same router.
I 've done everything, I renstalled it, repaired it, I cleaned registry and I tried logging in with 3 different accounts. I've also deleted "Windows Live Contacts" and "Messenger Cache" folders: I still get that error.

I've already posted in a lot of other forums, with the hope of finding someone having a solution, because on the net there are no informations about this issue.

Thanks for your help :)

i think from my experience. i had the problem once with my cousin's account. all other accounts can log in except for his. here's one method for you.

basically go to My Computer, Tools, Folder Options, View and put a dot to Show Hidden Files and folders.

Then navigate to your maindrive and go to your Documents And Settings, [Your Username], Under Local Settings, Application Data, Microsoft, from this part onwards. You SHOULD see Windows Live Contacts the folder itself. dun go on any folder. rename the Windows Live Contacts to Windows Live Contacts 1 or something. as long as you can rename it back and forth easily.

Then restart your computer and try logging in. it should work somehow. i did this on my windows xp service pack 3. and it work.

In fact I think the problem it's related to not-Service Pack 3 WinXP OS.

I read on the net that AVG could be the cause of this error, but I have Nod32. 8-)

Hi
Yes I had the same problem, I do use AVG antivirus
Open your AVG interface
Double-Click on the Web Shield
Select the Instant Messaging tab
then just uncheck MSN Protection

I dont use NOD but check the settings to see if there is a Messenger scanner setting similar to AVG could be causing the same type of problem.

Hope this helps :)

same problemo here! I have Bullguard as my anti-virus and it says it only works if the windows firewall is turned off so im wondering if it may be that or if it is being blocked. Anyone who can help would be much appreciated!

Leave it to the Mexicans to fix the error. xD
Go on the bing.com search server, then type in 'msn messenger error code 8000401a' and you should see a website in Spanish. It says 'translate this' or something in a link below it, so click that and read the four step directions. then go back and click the link from the non-translated site, since you can't click it when it's translated. Then after that you should be good. :] It worked for me, when nothing else did because I don't have AVG and I tried updating from an earlier version. I tried everything, but this is the only thing that worked. I hope it works for you. (:

I found this on another website and my msn is working fine now that i tried this. Official version of MSN 9.0 can not login after upgrading,
prompt error code 8000401a. Computer does not have to open any firewall
(including built-in system), anti-virus software. 8.5 when the original can,
but after the 9.0 upgrade will not be able to visit the MSN.

Solution: In the "Start - Run" dialog box, type "regedit",
the registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT / AppID find 380689D0-AFAA-47E6-B80E-A33436FE314B
then delete it and it should work fine.

L1Nk, would you please tell me exactly what you did to fix your problem. I went to the post you left a link for and downloaded something called Fix Error 8000401a and now I want to be sure that this is what you are saying fixed your problem. I have the same problem, but just want to be sure before I actually use the fix, which as I understand is going to mess with my registry. Thanks.

That post explains what those registry fixes do: the first one fix a problem of Windows Update that affects also WLM login (there is the link of the related Microsoft KB); the second one delete a registry key in order to reset WLM contact cache.
If you don't trust them, create a system restore point befor using! ;)

I should add that this still works - Windows Live Messenger 14.0.8117.416.

I used google translate (google it and paste the URL into the box, when you're on the google translate page) also.

Point 2 wasn't needed, as point 1 worked.

Thanks.
