WLM 9 - Freezing at 'random' times by welsh_pcwhiz on 01-27-2009 at 09:06 PM

I use messenger a lot, and every now and then it just freezes. Sometimes I am doing a lot with it, e.g. a number of tabbed convos open, a game and/or webcam, but other times I'm just using it for a single convo with nothing going on.

Sometimes it just freezes the whole machine, but mainly it just freezes everything to do with messenger; tray icon, open convos, contact list etc. When I try to close any window or use the tray icon the mouse pointer disappears when over the windows/icon. This seems strange.
Usually, after about 2 minutes, it sorts itself out and just goes back to normal, other times it's logged me out and is trying to log me back in, and once it just crashed and I had to reboot :(.

A few times, I've increased messenger's priority in Task Manager, and this does help (if set to Above Average, and not higher!). But I don't want to have to do this every time I use it, and I believe switching priorities can cause more problems :O.

I understand that this could be a processor problem, but is anyone having the same problem?

Thanks for any help.

Try upgrading (or indeed downgrading) adobe flash, as this has been linked with a number of 'random' WLM crashes

What scripts are you running? If you have Status2FTP set to upload on a timer it may freeze WLM for a moment. There may be other scripts that do this as well, of course.

Also, what are your PC's specs? This may also help us figure out the problem (if it is not indeed solved by djdannyp :P).

I already have adobe flash, so that's not my problem :(

The only script that I have installed is Stat Centre.

My PC is old (about 5 years :O) so I'm guessing it is that. Also, my C drive is very full at the moment, so that could be causing problems too. I do have a pagefile set up on an external hard drive as well as the one on C, but it's still quite slow at pretty much everything.

My PC specs are:
Intel Celeron 2.40GHz
1.25GB RAM
Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2

(Please don't suggest upgrading to SP3 as I have had problems with this when I installed it last time, unless you're sure that it would solve the crashing problem.)

Thanks again.

he said upgrade (or downgrade) not install

can't find the article to hand, but basically there are complications between the new messenger and adobe (which adobe are aware of, and going to/have produce an update)

OK, sorry, I didn't understand, I thought he meant upgrade messenger.

Well if anyone knows if/when this adobe flash update is available, post here please.

Thanks.

go there and download the latest version....and if that doesn't fix the problem, try uninstalling it and installing the older version also offered on that page
