Plus! Meeting, London '09 by Chrono on 01-28-2009 at 11:29 AM

As you may or may not know, i’m currently working in Madrid, Spain, until March (it’s a sort of internship thing). While i am here, i’m planning on visiting other countries, like Portugal, Italy and England (i’ve already been in Paris, it was awesome :chrongue:).

After realizing that many people where interested in the spanish forums about a Plus! (spanish) meeting in Barcelona (feb the 28th), i thought it would be a good idea to plan a Plus! Meeting on these forums aswell :cheesy:. I thought the best place to do it was in England, as i don’t think there are many people living in Portugal nor Italy atm :p. I’ve already talked to stiggy and traxor, and they will definitely be going to a meeting in London, and apparently gif will be going too :D.

Now, the thing is that i can only be there after march the 12th, so i thought the best possible date would be on Saturday, March 14th (i’m going back to Chile in March 16th).

I don’t know what will we be doing yet. In fact, people from London should plan something meanwhile, as i dont have much time to log into the forums :P

Anyone wants to/can go to the meeting? If so, post RIGHT NOW OR I’LL KILL YOU! :chroppy:. It’s a one time chance to meet Chrono 8-) rofl.

To make it clear: Saturday, March 14th, London.
Everyone’s welcomed :)

Chrono.

I'll check my (heavy) working schedule, and if I'm free I will be there (in an anti-ban hammer harness)....

Hmm. 800 mile round-trip car trek... could be fun. Although my poor little car might fall apart before I got there. >.<

Wow, I haven't been on these forums for a while, does anyone even remember me?

Either way, i'll show up :)

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by user27089 on 01-31-2009 at 12:24 AM

I remember you Saral, how could I ever forget? (l)

Naturally, as stated in Chrono's post, I will be making an appearance at the Plus! meeting in london. It's £13 return on the train from where I live, who can complain at that?

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by saralk on 01-31-2009 at 12:28 AM

Knock Knock
Who's there?
Saral
Saral who?
You said you'd never forget :(

But yeah, what are the plans for it, and how long is everyone staying for?

It's been a long time, count me in! (that is, if I'm invited of course). At last, I'm going to see Mr Chromo, my favorite beta leaker :p.

I will be going to Europe on sometime this year and with sufficient advance notice could probably make it fit my schedule.  Post details as soon as they are available.

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by CookieRevised on 02-02-2009 at 08:36 AM

Standing outside and staring at eachother for a an hour or two...
Then wandering the streets looking for something todo.
Going back from were we came from because we didn't found anything.
Standing outside a bit more and staring at eachother for an extra hour...
"Well..."
"Yes..."
"Ok..."
Somebody will suggest to go the a megastore.
"Hm.."
We stand outside a bit.
We walk inside and look at pretty things.
We come out again and stare a bit more...
Somebody notices it is already 5 o'clock and must leave...
The others will walk a bit more trying to find something to eat...
We end up in some kind of McDonalds mockup...
We walk outside and all go home...

The End

will you eat anything inside the McDonalds mockup or just walk out without eating? That could be the difference between me coming/not coming (beside the like $2000 price tag)

depends on how much everyone is willing to spend.
Things I can think of...

London Eye (£20 i think, although we'd be stuck in a bubble with each other for 30 minutes)
Pub - I know some really cool little bars and stuff that we could go to, 18+ only.
Science Museum - really cool geeky stuff to do there, i think it is free.
Depending on how long you're all staying for, I DJ at a club every Monday night, can get you all in for free.
Hyde Park
RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by segosa on 02-04-2009 at 05:14 PM

I'm not sure how many people would want to go on the London Eye.

What'll probably end up happening is we'll walk around like last time until someone finds somewhere suitable to eat or drink, or something to do.

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by Nathan on 02-04-2009 at 07:05 PM

Yeah cos you can't really book anything if no one knows who, and how many are turning up exactly. And it just means a waste of money.

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by TheBlasphemer on 02-04-2009 at 08:41 PM

Hmmm, I'm not entirely sure I'm free that time, but if I am and I'm able to book a cheap trip to London, I might join in ;)

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by gif83 on 02-05-2009 at 12:45 AM

Just realised the date you've chosen...

Red Nose Day the day before...
Celebrations in London for St. Patrick's the day after!

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by TheBlasphemer on 02-05-2009 at 09:12 AM

Hey, I can get tickets to either stansted, gatwick, or luton for roughly the same price. I remember that one of them was completely outside of londen, and I didn't particularly like that one :p

So if there's any londonners in here: which airport do you recommend?

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by Stigmata on 02-05-2009 at 09:15 AM

I think Gatwick is the closest one. Its about 40 minutes Victoria Station on the Gatwick Express.

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by toddy on 02-05-2009 at 09:35 AM

none are particularly close: stansted is 40ish miles, gatwick 30miles, luton is 35miles. if you can get a cheap flight to london city airport, thats your best bet. if not as stigmata says your probably best going to gatwick and get the express train

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by saralk on 02-05-2009 at 09:43 AM

Go to Gatwick, the gatwick express gets you into london in 15 minutes, it's £15 IIRC

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by segosa on 02-05-2009 at 12:09 PM

Since a lot of people want to come we should probably keep a list in the first post of yeses and maybes.

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by Eddie on 02-05-2009 at 02:51 PM

Wish i could come to this event, because i love england and would love to meet some people from this forum. Hope to see photos and videos afterwards :) Enjoy the meet!

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by Spunky on 02-05-2009 at 05:20 PM

Since no one wants to travel with me., It's cheaper for me to leave my car and travel by train or coach. I've booked coach tickets there and back for £3 (including booking fees :refuck:) :p

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by gif83 on 02-05-2009 at 05:40 PM

Well since no one's suggested anything, I put together a small starting list of potential stuff to do. Please do post to show your interest if anything stands out as a potential thing to do.

Things to do

Cultural
Museums and Galleries
Science Museum
Natural History Museum
Victoria and Albert Museum
British Museum
Tate Modern
Tate Britain
Hayward Gallery
National Gallery
National Portrait Gallery
Design Museumundefined
Sightseeing
London Eye
Houses of Parliament & Big Ben
Tower Bridge & Tower of London
St Pauls
Trafalgar Square
Some sort of River Cruise... Maybe on the “Duck” (land and water)
Music & Theatre
West End Musicals and Plays (may be hard to get cheap tickets for large groups)
Shakespeare's Globe Theatre
Comedy Clubs
Jazz Clubs an other live music type venues

Less Cultural
General Fun
Trocadero (arcade games, bumper cars, bowling, cinema ...that sort of thing)
Park (bring ball, frisbee... snacks, beer etc.. weather dependent)
Pub (there are enough of them around)
Bars and Clubs (for later)
Strip Club (we have to bring Patchou somewhere interesting right?)
Shopping (Westfields Shopping Centre... Oxford Street, Regent Street...etc. Maybe somewhere like Hamley's toy store or Harrods would be good.)
Cinemas
Bowling
Terrorising old people
Terrorising young people

Things to Eat
Pretty much anything and everything depending on people's tastes and budget.

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by ixesha on 02-09-2009 at 12:57 PM

For a large group for a cheap dinner the best place to get really good food would probably be New Tayyabs: http://www.tayyabs.co.uk/ - tons of Indian food, cooked the proper way, for very little money. Of course there are thousands of restaurants in London.. for those who are interested in food you can eat in a really good 2* Michelin place for like £30 a head with a set lunch; world class food etc. If you genuinely want more in depth food recommendations I can help with that side of things.

http://www.timeout.com/london/ - a good guide to finding out what's happening at specific dates&times/read reviews for food. http://www.visitlondon.com/events/index - does the same thing for happenings.

To echo gif83 - the British Museum is relentlessly awesome, as is the British Library. HMS Belfast on the river is open to visitors and is one of my favourite attractions in London. The IMAX cinema near Waterloo isn't too expensive and films can be worth seeing there. Greenwich is fun - park, observatory, maritime museum, pretty views. Denmark Street is amusing - non stop guitar shops. The best burgers in the known galaxy are to be had in Camden at Hache. The majority of the museums have free entry so for those who rarely/never visit London I would encourage you to visit at least the British and Natural History. They're world beaters. Harrods is an attraction (try playing spot-the-most-expensive-item and find that 400k table), as is Fortnum and Mason. Uhm, Borough Market is cool.

I've done the London Eye and it's cool, but probably wouldn't appeal to everyone. There's the London Zoo too, but again.. not for everyone.

I could also turn up. If anything interesting gets planned (or just to abuse wtbw). I can also provide a real Rubik's Cube as alluded to above.

Edit: TheBlasphemer, you can get a coach straight from Stansted to Victoria in central London for £10, comfortable, convenient, doesn't take too long (30-50 minutes depending on traffic). And you get the diminished hassle of using Stansted rather than Gatwick (Gatwick and Heathrow are both a pain in the rear end, I find).

Second edit: Hmm, gif83, is there anything good happening for St Pat's Day? Like, some kind of celebration in Trafalgar Square?

http://www.london.gov.uk/stpatricksday/

but it's all on the Sunday

edit: Though since it is that weekend I'm sure there will be all sorts of random stuff happening around town anyway for St Patty's

Just an extra little note to my previous one. Things appear to be turning out for the best for me, so it's likely that I will be present at the Plus! meeting. However, there are certain things I'm having to save up for (business investments) that mean I won't be able to spend a hell of a lot of money in London. Obviously I'll be able to attend most of the things, however I'll probably only be around for a few hours compared to a few other folks.

However, if anyone is visiting or going through Birmingham on that day, you may very well be on the same train as me. Also, if you're visiting Birmingham and don't have anything to do, give me a call (go to my site for my phone number) and we'll do something.

I'm pretty excited now that I know Patchou will be present to be honest.

With a forum boasting around 80,000 users, I think the page would take a little too long to load.

there is the 4th option of

"I'd prefer not to say if I am or aren't coming"

though iguess it would be the 3rd option as "Everyone else" would have to come after that.

So currently it stands at 11 people definitely coming with a potential crowd of 18... wow...London be afraid.. be very afraid.

I severely doubt we'll be that intimidating :p. I can't wait now, things really are looking up, so hopefully I'll be able to afford it definitely.

I've changed quite a bit since the Canada meeting.

I'm in such a predicament about it though, I'm really trying to save money, and the day will definitely involve spending money, I'm actually gutted, but I don't know whether I'll be able to make it.

John Anderton: I'm sorry but my luxurious lifestyle does not allow me to send money to my slavesbeloved testers. Wtbw knows some good air plane companies, you should ask him about that.

Ah yeah. Got a previous ticket in front of me actually, £7.50. :P

Have to get a short bus journey to the nearest underground station though, which adds a bit more ££ :P
RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by M73A on 02-27-2009 at 12:45 AM

what station you near? oh come on you must have an oyster card!
good old days of free bus travel when in school! have no idea how much i took that oyster card for granted until now! :-(

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by Chris4 on 02-27-2009 at 01:05 AM

I live in Harlow, so nearest station is Epping.

Nah I don't have an Oyster card. Not worth it, I don't travel enough.

Never knew about the free bus travel, wish they still had it. :P

yeah! free bus travel to anyone in full time education up to 18 years old. LOVED it

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by ixesha on 02-27-2009 at 01:09 PM

If you purchase train tickets way in advance they work out very cheap. From Birmingham (I think that's where you are, traxor) an Advance Single from Birmingham New Street to Marylebone (one change, but that reduces the cost) is £5.00, if you bought it today online (www.thetrainline.com). So, two of those cheap singles is a tenner - add a travelcard for Zones 1 and 2 (I suspect we wouldn't venture that far outside Central London) - and you're talking under £20 for the day's travel.

Edit: in fact if you go from Birmingham Snow Hill they go directly to to Marylebone, for a fiver still.

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by John Anderton on 02-27-2009 at 03:34 PM

I think trax has a problem with the money that he'd have to dish out once he is there (eating, going places etc) rather than getting there..
Over all, if you're relatively close by (even if its an hour or two from the city+city travel time) cost of travelling is lesser than the money that'd be spent there imo :)

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by Sunshine on 02-28-2009 at 03:17 PM

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by musicalmidget on 02-28-2009 at 06:17 PM

Hi guys, long time no see! :)

It's great to see a London meeting and if there's any chance I'm able to make it I'll be there.  The problem for me seems to be the transport.  It looks as though there are closures along the east coast mainline that weekend so an alternate route may be required.

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by M73A on 02-28-2009 at 10:49 PM

oh god, weekend = TUBE ENGINEERING WORKS! ....bloody olympics

so far only jubilee and district are affected. im sure there will be more!

That's exactly the point, getting there is okay. I don't mind spending the £15 on travel, because that's quite reasonable, it's just the fact that spending more money is inevitable. I'm spending £400 on driving lessons this weekend, it's been my Dad's birthday and my Mum & Dad's 25th wedding anniversary, so I'm pretty much wiped clean dry.

I do feel as though I'm missing out, but I'm very careful with my money now that I have a business to invest in, so spending money to go into my overdraft is a big no go for me. It's not that I don't want to. I'll give you a call on the day though to see how it's going.
RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by Sunshine on 03-01-2009 at 01:20 PM

Guess I won't be able to make it afterall. Prices (both airline tickets and hostel prices) seem to have skyrocketed and after doing some calculations I found I would have to go in debt (creditcard) 300 euros for travel and lodging alone....

..I'm sorry but that's just too much for one day of fun

What's wrong with Amsterdam (or Antwerp)?

Edit: Just to clarify, it's not the amount that's too much (I do recognise this once in a lifetime opportunity). It's the fact that paying off such a debt would take me at least 6 months! A few months would have been acceptable. Again, I'm truly sorry.

I can't see what much more you would actually need to spend in London itself. Theoretically.. £10 for a cinema ticket if we went to see a film, £10 for some lunch. What else is there? Museums are free, the outside St Patty's Day events will be free, parks are free, travelling around the city is covered in a travelcard, all the sightseeing is free, maybe if you bought a drink that's another £5.. I would guess nothing over £50 for the whole day - maximum/worst case scenario. More likely £35 tops.

Are you kidding me? Have you not read the rest of the thread. I'm trying to save money. Spending that amount of money isn't acceptable, not if you're careful. There are days I would spend that on, but at the moment, I'm not willing to go into my overdraft to do so. I'm running a business, and money I get is invested in that, or into driving (which is very expensive). Honestly to me, it's not that big of a deal me not being able to go there

Yes, I've read the entire thread and the initial pages have you adamant on attending. So, it comes as a surprise that you are giving up on that for the sake of £35. You're what? 19? 20? 21? Without trying to cause offence, you're young enough that you should allow some hedonism in your life and not be entirely serious about investments and overdrafts and business. Borrow £50 off your parents, do a paper round for a week, do a day's worth of manual labour for a friend or neighbour, work in a shop for a day - there are so many ways to earn that small amount of money. Holding back £50 worth of investment in your business isn't going to end the world, either.

It's not that I'm so eager for your to come, but you are wasting a huge opportunity to meet some very international visitors for what seems a trivial sum, especially since you expressed a vested interest from the beginning of the thread.

Yes, I was initially adamant that I was going to attend the meeting, because that was at a time before I realised how busy I am, and how reliant I would be with the money that is in my bank. I'm eighteen, and have left full time education to run a full time business for myself, which without trying to sound arrogant, is doing pretty damn well, and whilst I do have money flowing into my account, it is sometimes irregular, and over the next two weeks or so, the money will be a little slow (I've just dished out £400 that was completely necessary).

I don't mean to cause offence to you either, but just because you may have been out partying and spending money when you were my age doesn't mean that I have to follow that example. Trust me, I've had an amazing life so far, and I still am, but that doesn't mean I have to borrow money and go into my overdraft, which is something that I'm going to try my upmost not to do, I don't want to screw up my credit rating if I can't pay it back in time, it's not really worth it.

Don't patronise me or treat me like I'm stupid, even though I'm young does not mean that I don't have my head screwed on, whilst many people my age are clubbing, catching chlamydia, I'm treating myself to skiing holidays with my girlfriend, and having meetings with millionaires with whom I'm making some business deals with, how's that for hedonism? A different type to your definition perhaps, but for me: a thrill of a lifetime.

Yes, I did express an interest, and still do, should the situation arise where I have a good amount of money. For your information, I travelled to Canada in 2006 and had the opportunity of meeting several members of this forum then, so it wouldn't be a first for me.

There are a few things that I'm not willing to do in my life, one of which includes living in debt for the sake of 3 hours in London.

Ah well, I'm not going to get involved in depth in something so petty. Just a dichotomy. Enjoy.

Good, don't start it in the future. :)
RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by ixesha on 03-05-2009 at 07:16 PM

God, you're an arrogant and yet still ignorant fuck. How do the two extremes not implode in your head? Does trying to end a discussion with that level of mis-aimed contempt somehow fit into your haughty notion of hedonism?

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by Dr4g0n on 03-05-2009 at 07:30 PM

You just had to go and get insulting and unreasonable, didn't you?

traxor's posts have been anything but offensive and you resort to that whilst accusing him of contempt? Nice.

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by user27089 on 03-05-2009 at 10:32 PM

I was just giving you some advice. I've been here for nearly six years, and know how to behave. I've been nothing but friendly in every one of my posts, sorry if I offended you though, I honestly didn't mean to.

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by ixesha on 03-05-2009 at 11:06 PM

You'll find that I have been around this forum a lot longer than you imagine. I also know how to behave. But your arrogance is unbearable. Far from being offended by any of your comments I just find you yourself unfathomable and... just, yeah. I'm sure a mod will delete this offtopic discussion soon. In future: keep your smug 'advice' to yourself, your lack of intellect doesn't exactly make it useful or enlightening.

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by user27089 on 03-05-2009 at 11:31 PM

Are you actually kidding me? This is the reason I left the forum, idiots like you hanging around and posting utter bollocks. Get of your high horse ixesha and shut up. If you really knew me, which you don't, then you'd have a different opinion. You cannot get any idea what my personality in real life is from what I've written on this forum.

I agree with traxor... (Y)

Have fun guys and post pics!.

You're hardly an enigma wrapped in your florid prose. Amusing.

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by CookieRevised on 03-06-2009 at 02:01 AM

ok, and stop it please.... both have a point.

Yes, young people should allow for some 'hedonism' in their life because it is quite often now or never. But any individual should decide what that 'hedonism' is for him/herself and has every right to change their decision on the last minute or for whatever reason, no reason to call people names.

For anyone who want to come and don't want to spend a lot of money and/or don't want to go in overdraft you can always contact me and we could work something out.

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by prashker on 03-06-2009 at 04:09 AM

I want to come, Cookie can you loan me a plane ticket and a hotel.

Reasons to Loan Sam:

-You can kick my ass when we meet!

Yeah I know you all want to do it, break my nose, rip my bowels out and feast on them, then impregnate my girlfriend and wait 7 months then unwravel her belly button and suck out all the vaginal discharge and feast upon the baby. then fornicate my liver, then make me guzzle gallon after gallon of putrid diarrhea. i will gag on your green logs of asshole mud butter

Hi Cookie, that's a really nice offer :), very very generous. Obviously, I couldn't accept that though, my sister went through a tough time borrowing money, so I never want to do it, I'd rather struggle.

Seconded, I'll definitely come to a later meeting in the future. However, I'm in no position to embark on such a trip at the moment.

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by user27089 on 03-06-2009 at 04:47 PM

Just snap up the opportunity when you're visiting a major place, the main reason this meeting was started was because Chrono, Stigmata and I were speaking online, and Chrono wanted to know if we could meet up in London. I did the same at the Toronto meeting, I didn't go out of my way to buy tickets purposely for the meeting, I have family in Canada, and so made the trip to Toronto city from that.

Just a thought, if any of you want to come, but don't want to spend too much money. I live in London now, so you're more than welcome to crash at mine and also eat there (you'd have to buy the food, but making it would be a lot cheaper than buying it).

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by segosa on 03-09-2009 at 02:23 AM

How many people are confirmed as definite?

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by Chris4 on 03-09-2009 at 02:34 AM

Maybe someone should create an event on Facebook so we know who is "Definitely going" and who's "Maybe" .. or something similar?

Looks like I might not be able to attend. I have a show on saterday evening. So, unless I can come in the morning/noon and be back in Antwerp at 7pm or unless I can arrange something at the theater I wont be able to come. :'( Sometimes I hate my job

Is there no way that you can somehow find a proxy who would do it for you?
RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by CookieRevised on 03-11-2009 at 12:59 AM

Nope, unfortunatly not. That's the downside of working alone; can't be ill, can't take a day off etc, when there is some event.

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by ixesha on 03-13-2009 at 06:44 PM

For anyone who was too lazy to join the Google Group, the [admittedly small] consensus seems to be that we'll meet in either South Kensington or the Science Museum (very close together) between 14:00 and 14:30. A select few people shared their contact details on the group so.. that's the place to get mobile numbers if you want to communicate a more exact meetup. Good luck with the tube and see a few of you tomorrow.

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by user27089 on 03-16-2009 at 02:27 PM

So everyone, how did the meeting go? I called, but it was around 6pm, so most people had left already, and I only got the chance to talk to Patch, Will and Cookie I think, there was too much laughing and swapping of phones.

I had a massive feeling that Time was ixesha, it makes so much sense.

Hope you guys had fun :p, post some pictures! :)

Too many accents.
RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by gif83 on 03-17-2009 at 01:40 AM

Yes... it was a bit of an accent-fest. (as well as a sausage fest)
Really good to see everyone though.

Here are some pics.....

Chillin' in a cafe in South Kensington

Blatent posing inside cafe

Group shot... (currently minus Saralk and Time...to be Photoshoped in later when i get pics...) WARNING HUGEASS PIC

RE: Plus! Meeting, London '09 by CookieRevised on 03-17-2009 at 04:30 AM

Here is the only one I've took (cropped, fixed some of the overexposion and resized):
2 minute break in the science museum (before we went to dinner)
(fltr: Patchou, TB, wtbw, gif83, Chrono, Time)

Also Patchou and Chrono have taken some pictures, I'm sure they'll post them soonish when they get back home or something.

It seems like fun was had by all and I regret I couldn't be there.  Part of it was me not paying attention closely enough early on. I actually found out what the date was only two weeks before.  That's not much of a notice for a transatlantic trip and on top of that, I discovered my passport needed renewing.

Perhaps next time.  :)
