Try re-installing Windows Live Messenger or Repairing it through Add/Remove Programs and see if it works.

It doesn't show as Messenger in the list, scroll down and select Windows Live Essentials..Change/Remove and then choose Repair.

Restart when complete.

I have the same problem and I have used the repair function but I end up having to do this almost everyday. I am so sick of it and Microsoft offers absolutely NO support!

Same issue just happen to me on the same day I lost my PST file in outlook.  All 2 gig's gone, back up and archive data too.  Can't find a virus cause.

They offer all the support you want, well maybe not all you want, but still...

But they aren't going to ring you of course, you need to ring them (by clicking on a simple link which you will also find in Messenger itself under the menu... 'Help'):

                           ~~Heres what worked for me~~

In Internet Explorer, Remove the Check mark for Server certificate revocation check box.

   1. Start Internet Explorer.
   2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
   3. Click the Advanced tab, under Security
   4. Remove the Check mark for Server certificate revocation check box.
   5. Click Apply, than OK.
   6. Exit MSN than restart.
