WLM 2009 wont stop freeeezing by Number 18 on 03-28-2009 at 08:41 PM

its annoying it freezes every minute now

at first it was working great
later it started freezing (for a week)
and now I can't have a decent conversation

I uninstalled/reinstalled it now over 5 times and nothing has changed

I'm now using an older version 8.1
(cuz 8.5 wont install I get an error)

any ideas on whats wrong?
everyone seems to be ok with it

Are you using any add-ons/patches for Windows Live Messenger?

When you say it freezes.....how exactly do you mean?

Does it happen randomly, or when you try specific things?

RE: WLM 2009 wont stop freeeezing by Number 18 on 03-29-2009 at 08:00 AM

yea but they're all diabled I haven't used them for months now

and the freezing thing it just happen randomly

I get the "(not responding)" tag on the frame

RE: WLM 2009 wont stop freeeezing by djdannyp on 03-29-2009 at 08:57 AM

Are you running many other things along with WLM?

How much RAM do you have?

What happens if you just wait for like 10 mins when it goes to 'Not Responding'?  Does it unfreeze?

RE: WLM 2009 wont stop freeeezing by Number 18 on 03-29-2009 at 09:11 AM

firefox

I have 2G RAM

Nothing, the not responding is still there. I have to open the task manger myself and end it.

but I've noticed that the CPU goes to 40 something and higher when it happens

Use Windows XP?
I've got some problems with iTunes and WLM, if both were opened at the same time, the whole PC would freeze (and CPU would go to 100). Also with some other programs like Chrome and Full-Screen applications. Try running without firefox and see if gets better =)

Try disabling SuperFetch, disabling it boosted my Vista PC speed, and avoided lots of hick ups...

Superfetch preloads your "most used" programs in memory, but I guess it never worked since it only preloads Microsoft software I never used (¬¬')
Read this to disable =P

so?

RE: WLM 2009 wont stop freeeezing by TheSteve on 03-29-2009 at 03:47 PM

Does it only freeze when a conversation window is opened?

If so, it's probably a bug in messenger that hasn't been fixed. If this appears to be your problem, I maybe able to work out a hex edit that might fix it.  Let me know

I am also having this problem. Out of nowhere wlm will freeze and will hog 100% of a core. I thought i had solved the problem a while ago by reinstalling but its started up again and worse than before. I used to have msgplus and a-patch, but i haven't got either once i reinstalled. I have done minor google searches and this is appearing to be a common issue!

well rapid let me know if u ever get it fixed

RE: WLM 2009 wont stop freeeezing by TheSteve on 03-30-2009 at 12:53 AM

Well, for lack of other options, if you want you can try and do this:
This might help, but it might not.

1. Make sure that you are using Windows Live Messenger version 14.0.8064.206
2. Open the messenger folder.  Commonly this is C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger
3. Make a copy of liveNatTrav.dll just in case something goes wrong.
4. Open liveNatTrav.dll (from the messenger folder) in a hex editor.
If you don't have a hex editor, The editor I use is Notepad++ with the Hex Editor Plugin
5. At offset 0x00023FCA, you should see EB 36.  Change this to EB 3A.
6. Save the file and try messenger again.

If it still freezes, then it's a different problem than I think it is, and you can put the original liveNatTrav.dll back, but this trick worked for me, so it might help you too.

There is a 00023e60 with EB 36, a 00023fc0, a 00036db0, 00036f00

no 000023FCA though, which of those should i edit? Also what does this edit do?

00023FCA is in the row marked 00023FC0 it should start on the tenth byte on that row (hence why it's got A. 0xA=10)

This modifies a function that sends data over a UDP based socket. In my case, for some reason the call to send on the socket was failing with a fatal error message, but messenger treated it like an error that would automatically fix itself by trying to send again.

This hex edit changes the code so that it will break out of the loop when it receives a fatal error.

If you want to get technical: (if not feel free to skip this part)
0xEB is the machine code that means jump to a close address via offset.  This edit just changes the jump destination forward a few bytes.

ahh ok thanks, while i can convert hex to base10 (or any other for e-penis points), i have no idea about its coding properties :p

TheSteve, the man from Japan, thanks for your Hex code, it fixed a severe issue with my Messenger. :) <3

Yeah, it really is a severe issue, (for those who need to use UDP networking). I have reported the error to Microsoft, and I'm hoping they will fix it for the next release.
RE: WLM 2009 wont stop freeeezing by Rapid_W on 04-08-2009 at 11:26 PM

Hasn't worled for me. I still get freezes and hogging of one core. Sometimes wlm will be fine and work perfectly, othertimes it won't work at all. ahh well.

RE: WLM 2009 wont stop freeeezing by TheSteve on 04-09-2009 at 12:46 AM

It appears that your problem is else where then.  What you can do is install the "Debugging tools for windows" then follow the instructions in this page to setup Process Explorer to give better stack traces.
When messenger freezes, use Process Explorer to view the call stack of the frozen thread.  This should give a little more insight as to what the problem might be.
