Birthing Partner [Now had the baby!] by Vimto on 04-19-2009 at 01:02 PM

Back for more advice again :)

My mum is due to have her baby in 4 days but we think it's gunna be earlier, we have a codeword for when she goes into labour so I know to go to her house, "gaylord focker" (don't ask).

I have been put down to be her birthing partner (to be there for the birth). I've watched a birthing video but it was a bit weird.

I know there are a few daddys and mums in the community.

So I was just wondering if you have any tips for me when I'm in there/leading up to the birth. Like how to keep myself and mum calm, how to cope with the screaming etc :P

Thanks.

You arent going to call the baby Gaylord are you? :(

RE: Birthing Partner by Thor on 04-19-2009 at 01:20 PM

Don't panic. :p

I mean, really, as long as the surroundings don't go negative, I doubt your mum will.

Either way, she's had you so I'm pretty sure she's not going to find it anywhere near as challenging as you probably will. :p

RE: Birthing Partner by blessedguy on 04-19-2009 at 01:53 PM

Simple:

  • Do not freak out.
  • Forget about the blood.
  • Remember that your mother will be weak after the birth.
  • Keep saying: "It's coming!" if it's not a cesarian.
  • Good luck!

i've seen a woman give birth, the worst thing you can do is faint :p

RE: Birthing Partner by Spunky on 04-19-2009 at 10:14 PM

Don't expect too much blood or to see the waters break. It's quite rare for floods of water to come out and sanitary towels are usually kept close by to soak up the blood after the show.

You will probably be sworn at a bit and told to generally leave her alone, but just stay by her side.

Expect to have to go to the toilet with her (and expect some mess on the bed) as she most likely won't be able to make it by herself and mid-wives will be backwards and forwards a lot of the time. Also, she'll probably get really hot so expect to see a naked mother :p

Don't panic if there are complications. My son's heart beat started dropping and had to be pulled out. Forceps didn't work so they had to use a ventouse. The baby came out blue, cord around it's neck and not breathing. At this time there were about 8 people in the room (me, mother-in-law, girlfriend and the rest nurses). The fact is they are all professionals and know what they are doing. The most important thing you can do in that situation is to reassure your mom (and yourself) that everything is ok.

I would prepare some sandwiches and some bottles of pop (Loads of water for your mom too, as well as some cooling spray if you can). I was in hospital for around 15 hours, you may be in a lot longer...

If your she struggles towards the end, you may need to assist the mid-wives by pushing your mom's shoulder up off the bed when she is pushing.

I would recommend watching the baby coming out (if you're comfortable with it). I know it was the best moment of my life

[/YET ANOTHER SPUNKY LIFE LESSON] :p

My friend became an uncle today, and he said when he went to see the mother and baby, the mother was covered in blood and shit (as in poo) and she had a massive back ache. I think yours went relatively well :P
RE: Birthing Partner by Phillip on 04-20-2009 at 08:47 AM

Wow I never want to see someone give birth.

Yeah, we did still have to change the bed sheets a few times, in between gasps on the gas on air I had handy

I think you've just put the entire forum off childbirth.

Mum's getting really fed up now, her due date was friday just gone.
She cried yesterday because my brother flattened the fur rug.

So anxious!

Good News / Bad News

Good News : Mum's had the baby, healthy baby boy, gorgeous, 7 pounds 14 ounces.

Kinda Bad News: Went to the hospital with her yesterday for her to be induced. Had two doses of the induction tablet thingie, nothing was happening, we were informed that they have to check every hour the baby's heartbeat, they did this by strapping this machine to her stomache and recording the heartbeat for 20 minutes each hour. This continued until around 6 o clock. After that there were no midwives around, I even checked around the ward, until I had to leave (10 o clock, still no baby).

Got a text from my mum at around 11.30pm saying she was in early labour; small contractions.

Got a call from the hospital at 00.44am, saying that my mum has had to go into an emergency cesarean, didn't tell me much. I went to the hospital and the delivery midwife came to speak to me. Apparently they checked the baby's heartbeat at around 11.45pm, and found that the heartbeat was less than half what it should be, she was only 4cm dialated so they had to rush her to theatre to get him out.

When I went to see her it wasn't very nice, tubes everywhere, gas mask etc. She was really upset, having to go through that on her own.

What I'm annoyed at and I will be inquiring about today is why they didn't check the heartbeat for 5 + hours. If they had caught this sooner she would not have had to go through this on her own. Annoyed me quite a bit.

Anyway, I'm going back the hospital in an hour. :) Will provide pics, probably later on.

Adam.... it doesn't sound nice in portuguese (Adão), specially if Eva comes before =P.
Anyways, it means "man" or "earth", and beggins with "A", wich makes it a very nice name =)

Just keep her calm on the way there and when she's there keep out the way while the docs do their stuff.
