almost constant instant message spam by dnst3qface on 04-25-2009 at 11:12 PM

i know this forum is for msngr plus and whatnot. but i honestly dont know where to turn. maybe you guys here can refer me to a different forum or website? i'll describe the issue but i'll keep it short. for about 5 months i've been getting instant messages on windows live messenger from random hotmail ID's. not only were they random, but they also contained spam of some sort. most of them contained the same message and the same website too. mostly for porn i believe. i once decided to stay on messenger and continue to let these messages build up. i clocked in about 110 or so. not counting instant messages from my friends. the time span to collect 110 of spam messages was about 2 weeks. so as you can see its pretty bad. ill include a screen shot to give you an idea too. currently i have 20 msgs in total. why did i wait so long to ask? well when this started i found no way to stop them. except to turn on the messaging feature. that says no one but who i know can message me. i like keeping it off so maybe if someone i dont, thats not a bot, would message me, ya know?
so as you can see. 20 of those messages = what ive accumulated so far. im sure there's more to come. so any ideas? maybe some other forum or place could help me? i know this could be cured with ticking the message from certain people option but i want to leave it for last. thanks for any help!

Well, AFAIK it's the only solution, and anyway, people will still be able to add you and all that, just not directly message you as is happening. Most people have this feature turned on for this very reason.

what do you mean when you say "AFAIK"?

I'd strongly advise you to do what ryxdp said.

Why would you want random people messaging you?

It's the only solution to your problem.

Anyone can still add you, so I don't see the problem.

It's annoying when so many of your contacts are either infected with malware or have their credentials stolen. Blocking your affected contacts is obviously not the answer.

There doesn't seem to be an elegant solution for this. Can a spam filter be implemented to discard these messages? I haven't used msgplus in a long time but IIRC there's a keyword filter. Can it be extended to suit this purpose as well?
