Softmod Original Xbox by ipab on 08-01-2009 at 11:30 PM

I'm thinking of getting an original xbox from a friend to use as a media center for my TV. I have no idea how to softmod it and I was wondering if anyone has done it before and can give me a hand with the process... I'm basically interested in the ability to plug in a usb flash drive and play movies off of it...

I'm guessing you saw this http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-softmod-your-xbox...for-FREE/

I managed to softmod mine without all that hot swapping, I'll try to find the link/vid and get back to you. It is totally worth it, I have no need for a DVD player or Apple TV sort-of-device with it.

(I have never tried plugging in a USB storage device for watching videos, I usually just FTP the vids across to the xbox and watch it straight off its hard drive)

Oh I forgot, you'll need a special version of Goldeneye, MechAssault or Splinter Cell. I picked up MechAssault off ebay a long time ago for a few bucks (I messaged the seller asking for the serial on the disk to make sure it was a valid version).

I used http://alive.atari.org/alive12/xbox.php up until the  point at which the exploit is run off the game, then this video to guide me through the installation process: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7055566905625842780&q=zzk2001 (I just preferred seeing a visual guide).

If you want the specific files I used then PM/WLM me and I'll see what I can do.

I have one, but my xbox can't see my external hdd, probably because there's an IDE/SATA controller in there as well. You might be able to read from a flash drive, but don't expect every USB storage device to work.
Not that it's a problem though, I usually stream my movies over the network which works great.

As for the mod itself, I used the hotswap on my dad's xbox (he bought one for the media center as well) without any problems. My own was modded already when I bought it.
