Internet dies when I set status to "Available" by iBubble on 11-22-2009 at 07:36 PM

Hey guys~

This little issue appeared out of the blue yesterday morning.
At first we thought it was normal Charter-internet- up and downage, but after a days worth of trial and error, my mom and I realized it was in fact, due to Windows Live Messenger.

What happens is, I'll sign into WLM (Version 2009, Build 14.0.8089.726), and I'll have my status set to "Appear Offline". But as soon as I change it to anything else, BOOM. I'm signed out, the internet connection is dead, and nothing loads.
The only way to get the net back up again is by resetting the router.

Couple other tidbits which may help with problem solving:
--We attempted to try my mom's WLM, to see if it did the same, but it told her she had to update first. But it stops mid way and says it can't grab a connection.
--I can't repair mine, as it claims that it can't install "Windows Application Error Report"
--I've disabled Plus' features and such, still same problem.
--Not the firewall/virus protection/anything of the sort, we've pretty much tried it all.
--We're both running XP SP3, and connected to the internet via wired network connection.

Help is much appreciated as this is kind of really irritating :]
If you need anymore info, just ask!
Thank you <3

Possible Mini-Breakthrough?:
You know how when you lose internet connection, WLM will try and automatically reconnect every 2 minutes or so?
It seems that after I reset the router and it automatically reconnects and signs me in as "available", I don't have a problem.
But if I try and sign in on my own, my internet dies.
Any ideas? <3

Try downloading WLM here on your mom's PC, then we can eliminate whether it's just your PC with the problem or the whole internet connection.

Please always only link to the official download pages. Those other download pages are previous versions (and dodgy) and/or will not be updated.

Always link to http://messenger.live.com or http://download.live.com/?sku=messenger

Redownload and re-install from an official source (see the two links above). Version 14.0.8089.726 is not the latest version.

;)

But re-downloading and re-installing using the Windows Live site gives me that version =/
And there's no indication to update....
Any other suggestions though? :]

It's been almost a month, and we thought maybe it was just an error on Windows part, but apparently not..

Edit: This is also the same version all my friends have.

That would suggest that it's a problem with your router. Maybe it's somehow blocking Messenger once you appear online? Unplug your router and connect your computer directly to the modem with an ethernet cable. If you can connect fine, it's a problem with the router which we can look into.

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be an option...
As our "router" serves as both.
In order to get any kind of direct connection without the router, I believe I'd have to run Charter's (our internet provider) cable underneath our house, to my computer. Which would not only be incredibly difficult since they're on opposite ends of the house, but may also be highly unlikely, as the cable is very short.
I'm not very tech-savy when it comes to this, so correct me if I'm wrong :]

So you're saying your computers connection to the router is wireless?

By resetting it do you mean turn it off then on?

On most routers, whether it be wired or wireless, it should have a factory reset button. Maybe that'll fix the problem.

Try removing your display picture and private message. I think its the problem that I have aswell. Its MSN having trouble interacting with its servers to retrieve or save your display picture.. or something like that.

Try turning off those two. Click your display pic and click the circle with the line through it, and disable your background for it aswell. These things seem to be breaking it.
