really irritating webcam problem by aleks.stoj on 01-06-2010 at 06:57 AM

hey. when i go to audio and video setup, and try to pick my webcam from the drop down list, the program automatically crashes and shuts down, meaning i cant pick it and therefore cant operate my webcam via msn or show it to contacts. ive tried un-installing and re-installing the webcam driver and it doesnt help. the webcam is a hp webcam thats built into my laptop. also i dont have the plus! extension installed. what could the issue be? thanks for your help

According to this, you need to be connected to WLM through a UPnP port in order for voice and video to work correctly. Check by going to Tools > Options > Connection.

You can try restarting the Windows Image Acquisition Service (WIA) service as suggested here.

Has it worked before? Is the webcam definitely supported for your OS?

I had this issue a long time ago, and I never found a fix for it no matter what I did. The only thing that fixed it was a small cleanup utility, I can't remember the name but I shall have a look through my history, sorry to dump on this but yeah.

Maybe corrupted Messenger cache then?

See Step 7 of CookieRevised's guide to Completely remove (MSN/Windows Live) Messenger
Note: Deleting some of the folders (specifically \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Messenger) will remove personal settings (like display pictures, custom emoticons, etc.) so you can avoid that folder if you like.

Hmmm, I don't know if that solved my issue but maybe. Who knows. I know that "Step 7" helped fix my numerous sign in errors though ahah!

Cleanup utilities like CCleaner deletes general Messenger cache, so that may have fixed your problem.
