Unable to log in, unable to uninstall. by HazzaH on 01-17-2010 at 07:50 PM

A few days ago my messenger stopped being able to sign in after my computer had a physical memory dump and rebooted itself. This has happened many times before without any lasting damage. When the messenger tries to log on it gives me an error message saying the LiveNatTrav.dll was not found and that I should try to reinstall the program to fix this.

Upon trying to use the Add/Remove programs application in the Windows Control Panel, it takes a long time and eventually another error message shows in the uninstall window saying the program could not be uninstalled and gives me the error code: 2318  it also says it look as if another program is stopping the installer from removing the messenger and gives me the code: hr:0x80070643

I've attached the LiveNatTrav.dll file. Download and extract it into the C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\ folder (assuming C is the letter of your hard drive you're using).

I tried to drag and drop the file in to the folder, I am asked if I want to replace the current one. I say yes, and an error message appears telling me that a file with that specific name already exists and I must choose another name.

Trying to copy and paste the file gives the error message that it could not be copied due to a I/O device error.

Try uninstalling Windows Live Messenger with ZapMessenger and then try reinstalling.

How to use:
To use ZapMessenger, just download the zip and run the executable.  No installation is required.   Please note that the .NET Framework 2.0 or above is required, which you can install from Microsoft if you don’t already have it.  The Framework has been on Windows Update for quite some time and is included in Vista by default, so more than likely it is already installed.

Using ZapMessenger did not remove Windows Live.

Trying to reinstall it I get the same error code 2318, saying that a program is preventing the installer from working properly, but there are no other programs open.

1. Download the latest WLM and try and install it.

2. If you have Messenger Plus! Live, go to Control Panel > Uninstall Programs > Messenger Plus! Live > Repair Messenger.

3. Try using the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility and remove the Windows Live Messenger installation files.

Sorry it's taken so long to respond

Even after using the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, removing all Windows Live installed components and then downloading and attempting to reinstall did not work. The same error message as before.

Possible bad sector on the hard drive?

My Computer > Right click on your hard drive > Properties > Tools tab > Under 'Error-checking' click 'Check Now...' > Tick both boxes and hit Start.

Right clicking on My Computer and then on Properties does not bring up anything with a Tools tab. Nor any 'Error-checking' with a 'Check Now...'

Right-click on your Hard Disk Drive in Windows Explorer, not "My Computer".
