Can't log in (Eternal spinning buddies) by emaster8 on 01-21-2010 at 02:12 AM

Yeah, I can't log in, all I get after trying to sign into WLM 2009 (Build 14.0.8) is the spinning buddies you always get after doing so and they'll just keep on spinning over and over until a time's past. I've already tried 3 solutions and none of them worked.
Registry Key solution: FAILED
Autotuning solution: FAILED
Msn Status webpage solution: FAILED
All of these solutions can be found at this topic: http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=67323
Bad thing that none of them worked for me "/. I had Messenger Plus! Live installed when I was forced to upgrade to this version, if it's of any help. I'd like to get a working solution please =)

Ok, lets try and work out what's blocking you from signing in.

Carefully check Control Panel > Programs list and remove any Messenger add-ons (including Plus!), as well as these problematic programs.

Next thing, what security do you have? Firewall? Internet security? Anti-virus? I'd recommend removing them and restarting your computer, it's the only way we can be sure.

You should also try leaving Messenger trying to connect (with the spinning 'buddies') and eventually it should give you an error message + code, which can help determine the problem.

Try to using the Connection Troubleshooter (you don’t have to login to Messenger to do this). You can find it in Messenger -> Tools -> Options -> Connection tab. What is the result?

Also on the same tab, click Advanced Settings, then all the fields should be blank. Try clicking 'Test' on TCP, it should say 'Success, you can connect to the Windows Live Messenger service.' if it works.

Ok, uninstalled Plus! (Only Add-On I have). I got Norton AntiVirus 2008 (Includes Firewall) and Nvidia Firewall, instances from every messenger application/sub-application are allowed. Messenger gives no error message or code at all. Connection Troubleshooter results:

(Check) IP
(Check) Default Gateway
(Check) IE's offline setting
(Alert Sign) Hosts File
(Check) DNS
(Check) Proxy Server
(Alert Sign) Key Ports
(Check) Wireless

TCP Test: We are enable to connect (8007274c)

Seems like that's the problem, however, to make it easier for you, on the Connection tab it says "You are currently not connected to .NET service".

Wishing for further support =)

Click Start > Run
Paste the following in the run box:
notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Paste the text from the file here in this thread.

"# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.

# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

127.0.0.1       localhost
127.0.0.1                activate.adobe.com
69.46.16.215    launcher.worldofwarcraft.com
65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com
65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.akadns.net"

I have a LITTLE experience with this file, the localhost line, for what I've heard, can't be touched. Adobe line one was added by itself. World Of Warcraft one, added by me a long time ago, no problems coming since then. Both messenger lines were one of the solutions that were given to me which failed.

Remove all that and save it :P

Done, deleted, everything stayed the same except for the Alert Sign it showed next to "Hosts File", which changed to a Check.

Good.

Now, check your firewall is not blocking TCP 80, 443, 1863 port.

RE: Can't log in (Eternal spinning buddies) by emaster8 on 01-26-2010 at 10:55 PM

Nope, not blocking any of those ports.

What firewall are you running?

The 'key ports' problem is most likely due to Norton.

Try this to configuring Windows Live Messenger through the Norton Firewall.

Alternatively, disable or remove it.

All of the instances from msn files are allowed (Every single .exe is shown as Allow) (On both firewalls, Norton and Nvidia). When you say disable or remove it, you mean the antivirus? :S

A firewall isn't the same as an antivirus. An anti virus is protection against files that replicate and or distribute or infect other files. A firewall blocks traffic inbound and outbound.

I know but Norton also has a firewall included

Tbh, Norton uses alot of power to run and really sucks. Try another security suite :P

Actually, that's my provider's choice (My dad's), haha. So, can't do anything about it. Any other idea for fixing my msn?

RE: Can't log in (Eternal spinning buddies) by emaster8 on 02-03-2010 at 01:45 AM

WOOHOO! FIXED! After a WHOLE afternoon trying to see what the problem was with a friend, all I had to do was uninstall NVIDIA Firewall (Which he says I don't need because routers got an integrated firewall, plus, I also got Norton's). So, for future reference, if anybody has NVIDIA Firewall installed and is getting this error, uninstall NVIDIA Firewall (Aka NVIDIA Network Assistant) and you'll get no problems!
