few messeger related stuff by moudy on 03-07-2010 at 10:37 PM

Hello, how is every one ? :)
I have few questions regarding msn, hope that some here has the answers

1- I assume you all know that its possible to add a yahoo address on msn, I was wondering if the same is possible with a gmail acount ?

2- I want to update my system from vista to windows 7... for sure I would be backing up my chat logs...  What I want to know, is it possible after installing msn plus to have the same chat logs updated... meaning that I don't want new chat logs to be made, I would prefer to add to the same logs I had previously ( if possible )

thanks a lot for any reply :D

1. No, only yahoo is support (and is rather limited).

2. Not sure, but maybe. I don't think so, but I may be wrong.

1 - You can add a gmail account as long as they have it activated for use through Windows Live Messenger.  It is possible to use any e-mail account through Messenger as long as it is verified and as long as it is verified then you will be able to chat with them.

2 - Yes, adding to the same chatlogs is possible as long as you copy them back over to the same place.

And make sure that your settings are set to use the same place.  If it's Messenger Plus! Live settings then you can use the Export Settings Wizard to do this, if it's Windows Live Messenger's own chat logs then you can just check the settings from inside Messenger itself

Though this only applies if you're doing a fresh install.  If you choose to "Upgrade" then nothing will change, you only need to worry about this if you are doing a 'Clean' install and formatting your hard drive

What the OP probably means is, is it possible to talk to people on Google Talk in Windows Live Messenger? Which, the answer would be no.

  • Windows Live Messenger -> Google Talk [Image: cross.png]

Microsoft and Yahoo! made an agreement in 2005 to allow users to talk across their IM platforms, that's the only reason that's possible.

However like djdannyp said, a Gmail user can sign up with their email address and use Windows Live Messenger. It's not restricted to Hotmail only.

Thanks Chris4, djdannyp, krissy-afc for the replies :) I appreciate it.

@djdannyp: I meant to say fresh intsall, I mentioned back up, I already meant fresh install :)... And I'm really glad to hear that it works

@krissy-afc: Yes what I meant is google talk, to talk with a person who has a gmail acount through msn... which appearantly doesnt work :/

Any way thanks alot for the reply.

There's IM clients which allow you to login to multiple protocols[?] at the same time, if that's of any use?

See Pidgin, Miranda, Trillian, Meebo (web) etc. :)
