Hotmail sending dodgy emails by Chris4 on 05-06-2010 at 03:42 PM

Some has used my account to send dodgy emails to all my contacts.

I knew this because I had loads of "Failed Delivery" emails in my inbox.

I checked my sent messages, but they weren't there.

However I found them in the deleted box.

Hey, good news!
I ordered one BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx from this website www.eletron-top.com one  weeks ago, today I've got it . Amazing, beyond my imagination, it's genuine and as good as expected, but much cheaper. I'm pleased to share this good news with you! May all goes well

Problem is I have no idea how this happened.

I've changed my password now but I'm quite sure I didn't fall for any phishing scams.. :S

Only thing I can think of is I was adding a couple applications on Facebook.

Eddie said he had a similar problem and he thought it originated from Facebook.

I can't see how they can get access to my email just by adding an application though?

Have you contacted hotmail about it?

I haven't.

I had one like this a few months ago, dunno how it happened (again I only found out because of the failed delivery), but I just changed my password and it never happened again....and I definitely hadn't done anything....probably just something randomly using any e-mail addresses it can to send the message and as the return address......it's easy enough to spoof a "sent from" field

I'm not in any person's facebook, yet I've recieved such an email from you. So te only way they could've got my email address is by getting into your address book (or you publishing the emails, but you didn't do that I hope :P)...

So, without having your password I don't see how someone could be mailing in your name on your account (since you have sent messages in your trashbin o.O) to your address book. Meaning they either guessed the password or there must have been some phishing website involved here though (or keylogger or whatever)...

and there I was thinking you wanted to share some cool exciting deal with us :(... pfffff... :p

Ha, sorry about that. It's rather embarrassing :dodgy:

I've changed my password and scanned my PC.

Will be extra careful and hope it doesn't happen again. (Y)

That's a contact of mine. It added 1 contact in the To: and about 10 in the Bcc:, then repeated lots of times.

my old @msn was doing the same a few weeks ago, which i haven't used in years*. So something dodgy going on with hotmail/msn i think !?

*although gmail does check the account for emails, but haven't actually logged in myself or given out the email address in years
