I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by AlexielLore on 05-31-2010 at 03:22 PM

I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live :( I installed it last night and it just won't work. The mail works, and everything else, but the messenger doesn't... and it doesn't give me any error :(
Any suggestions?

Stay away from leaked software?

Get the real latest at http://download.live.com/messenger

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by AlexielLore on 05-31-2010 at 04:09 PM

That is exactly the one I downloaded, the proper one. Not fake, not leaked. I didn't even know there are any fake ones :))
Thanks!

Can you explain what happens when you try to sign in?

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by Lou on 06-02-2010 at 02:16 AM

Can you go to Help -> About Messenger
and post a screenshot of that window?
(if you can't view that menu, hit the alt key first)

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by Wileyska on 06-04-2010 at 05:59 PM

I downloaded the latest Windows Live Messenger yesterday afternoon (06/03/10) after 3 days of MSN Live and MSN Plus Live troubleshooting. Everything was kind of working until last night. "Kind of means:" I was able to log in to MSN Live Messenger with Plus, and no contacts list, but I managed.

This morning when I open up MSN Live I see the list of accounts on the drop down, when I click on Sign In, nothing really happens.

If I go to HELP/About Messenger nothing comes up.
If I go to HELP/Service Status it takes me to their web page.

When I go to TOOLS/Options/Connection/Advance Settings and Tet on TCP I get Connected, verifying ability to send data now...Success, you can connect to the Windows Live Messenger service.

Note: TOOLS/Options/Personal and other options are disabled.

The last 3 days I have been troubleshooting the following:
1- No Contact list.
2- MPLive was not coming up after installed.
3- No Custome Emoticones

I resolved #2, then I wanted to go back and fix #1. I followed some instructions I found on this webpage (Can't remember the thread, but it was one I had to download ZapMessenger and follow some manual steps deleting files from different paths, etc.)

I am logged in as ADMINISTRATOR, I have uninstalled and installed MSN Live and Plus about 15 times.
When I log in from another laptop or desktop, everything is just fine. I get contacts and Plus.

I think it has to do with some registry files I might have deleted yesterday, but really don't know which ones or how to manually do it and put them back.

I had disabled my anti-virus and firewall to make sure nothing is blocking it.
I have no SmileyCentral, blah, blah... I took care of this 2 days ago.

After 3 days, I am really giving up on this, but I need MSN to communicate with Clients and Family. I have read (I think) every possible thread on this website that I could find about this and other issues and I just want a solution...even if you send me to another thread I haven't read...but 3 days of reading, unintalling, installing, restarting are enough. (Sorry, I had to get it out of my system :) )

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by Chris4 on 06-04-2010 at 10:12 PM

Wileyska, if you are/were having problems with Plus! and WLM, you should uninstall Messenger Plus! Live and restart your computer to see if your problem with WLM continues, so we can focus on the WLM problem first.

You've probably already tried it, but these steps will instruct you to do a clean install. Otherwise I'm lost for ideas.

Re. problem #3 see here.

P.S. To avoid confusion, please use correct names.
MSN Live = Windows Live Messenger (WLM)
MSN Plus Live = Messenger Plus! Live (Msg Plus! Live)

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by Wileyska on 06-07-2010 at 02:04 PM

Those are the exact steps I followed and then got this issue.

#1 issue is: I cannot sign in to MSN Live

#2 MSN Plus: if I don't fix 1st, I can't resolve this one

#3 Customed Emoticons: I need to solve #1

I already uninstalled everything and it is not working. I see the icon, it opens up, I have my drop down, I see my login name and password, I hit SIGN IN, nothing happens.

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by djdannyp on 06-07-2010 at 02:39 PM

If you right click on the taskbar and open the Task Manager, do you see WLComm.exe as a running process on the processes tab?

Also, please take note of Chris' point.  The names of the software are very important as if you use the incorrect terms it makes it harder for people to understand what you are talking about and therefore to help you

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by Wileyska on 06-07-2010 at 07:28 PM

I don't see WLComm.exe in Processes tab under Task Manager.

After I followed the Thread with ZapMessenger (which is the same thread Chris4 sent me to) this issue started.
I can open Windows Live Messenger, I see my login name, but when I click, nothing happens.

Since this morning when I set my mind to start troubleshooting again, I wanted to uninstall everything but the Windows Live Essentials is no longer in the list to Add/Remove Programs. I deleted the folder manually thru C:\Program Files\Windows Live and ran installation again, but it says that Messenger Live is already installed. I couldn't ever repair it. Somehow, I finally got it to uninstall and I decided to install Windows Live Messenger 8.0, just to have an earlier version and from there update to latest. It installed 8.0 sucessfully. Then it forced me to update, I said YES, and I got Error: 0x80280007 and tells me that I already have some Windows Live essential tools installed. I ran "cleanmgr" to perform Clean Installation of Windows Live Messenger and deleted 4 registry files they recommend in windowslivehelp.com, restarted my pc and nothing.
I deleted everything again, uninstalling and removing them manually. Ran the Windows Live installation and I got MSN Messenger will be repaired (very surprised and excited)...but when it finished, nothing...I am back to having a login screen and no response when I click on Sing in.

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by djdannyp on 06-07-2010 at 08:04 PM

If Wlmcomm isn't running that's the reason why it doesn't do anything when you try to sign in.

If you go to C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Contacts is the file in there?

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by Wileyska on 06-07-2010 at 08:33 PM

I copied from the Windows Live Messenger that works (my desktop) folders I was missing in C:\program files\Windows live.
I only had Messenger and Mail, so I copied: Contacts, Installer, Mail and Writer (just to make sure both of my pc's were the same)
Then tried, nothing happened.
Then I ran wlarp.exe from C:\program files\Windows live\installer
Restarted my PC and worked.

Not being able to Sing in- Problem solved!!!

Back to original issues:
1- I can't see my contacts
2- send custom emoticones.

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by djdannyp on 06-07-2010 at 09:21 PM

If you sign into a Web Messenger such as eBuddy can you see your contact list?

Do you see the Messenger Plus! Live icon on the contact list window?

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by Wileyska on 06-08-2010 at 01:50 PM

When I login thru eBuddy- I do see my contacts
When I login thru Windows Live Messenger from 3 other desktops- I do see my contacts

It is only the laptop that I work from and take home with that I don't see them. I think it has to do with some windows update.

I do see, have and use Messenger Plus Live. It was not working for a while (2 days) because I was trying to run Windows Messeger Live under 2000 compatability (part of troubleshooting), then Messenger Plus Live died, but I figured it out and it works. Thanks to Messenger Plus Live at least I have my contacts on desktop.

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by djdannyp on 06-08-2010 at 04:34 PM

There are instructions on here for clearing out the local contact cache to get it to re-downlaod correctly:

Yes, running Windows Live Messenger in compatibility mode will prevent Messenger Plus! Live from working properly.
RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by Wileyska on 06-08-2010 at 06:57 PM

Did that...3 times already

Yes, I know...

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by djdannyp on 06-08-2010 at 07:30 PM

How long do you stay signed in for after your contact list fails to appear?

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by Wileyska on 06-09-2010 at 12:57 PM

It never does...From the moment I sign in to where I sing out, My contacts list never shows up in Windows Live Messenger.

I have two ways to see which contacts are online or not:

1-Messenger Plus Live Desktop Contacts
2-Open Messenger/Actions/ Send an Instant Message/ then I see my contacts

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by djdannyp on 06-09-2010 at 01:02 PM

Oh....so your contacts are all still there (as indicated by the scrollbar), just not being displayed?

If you uninstall Messenger Plus! Live do they show up again?

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by Yes on 06-09-2010 at 03:53 PM

uninstall it then try to install the original wlm then write ur e-mail , password, check remember me then click sign in if there still a problem click troubleshoot and it'll search for the problem then try to repair it if u can't have a new threat and we'll sea what's the problem    hopefully it helps thnx

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by matty on 06-09-2010 at 04:47 PM

The OP has already reinstalled the latest version without success. I am wondering if there is a routing issue or if something is blocking the transmisson of the data to the server.

If you look at the picture you can see that the data is being retrieved, it's just physically not displaying on the screen, it could be a transparency issue or something like that?  Look at the size of the scrollbar, it's all there....and is obviously there as she can access it via "Send a message..."
RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by matty on 06-09-2010 at 05:40 PM

Wow how did I miss that attachment!

I wonder if the OP has a skin installed that is interferring with the contact list.

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by djdannyp on 06-09-2010 at 06:58 PM

Yeah, that was my thought......either a skin or a general Messenger Plus! Live issue (perhaps transparency).....hence asking her to uninstall MP!L and seeing if it fixes it

ANSWER: even when I uninstall Messenger Plus Live, contacts still don't show...I already tried that.

ANSWER: already tried that...didn't work.

NOTE: if I click on SCROLL BAR, it crashes the Messenger Live
Note2: I went ahead and uninstalled Messenger Plus Live (again) and my contacts still didn't show up and trying to move SCROLL BAR crashed MSN Live again

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by djdannyp on 06-09-2010 at 09:35 PM

Do you have any other add-ons for Windows Live Messenger?

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by Wileyska on 06-14-2010 at 02:07 AM

No I don't. Never had. I've been using Messenger Live and Messenger Plus Live way before the got "live"
I do have some scripts, but I already disabled them, and still no luck.

I still believe it is an update from microsoft or registry issue.
At work I have a desktop and the laptop. I haven't installed any updates to my desktop computer, Messenger Live + Messenger Plus Live works- shows my contacts. On the other hand, my laptop have all the Microsoft updates and it is the one I have the issue.

At my house I have 3 computers, all of them work just fine. I am really running out of options.

A few other things that are not working...maybe it helps, maybe not...
1- custom emoticons: I had over 300 of them and now they are gone. I did have a backup but when I want to ADD or EDIT custom emoticons, it will not let me, nothing happens (pic included)
2- about messenger: If I want to see the version of Windows Live Messenger, it won't show up (how do I include more pics?)
3- Edit Custom Emoticons thru Windows Plus Live: I get message
4- Connection Test- I get an error
5- History Conversations- nothing

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by Wileyska on 06-29-2010 at 06:51 PM

did everybody give up on this?

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by Menthix on 06-29-2010 at 07:09 PM

Did you try the public beta? http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials-beta

I think the problem disappeared automatically for most. I haven't seen it appear anymore.

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by Wileyska on 06-30-2010 at 01:36 PM

I would, but I don't have Windows 7... Beta requires Windows 7

I still use XP (Vista always sucked and I am not planning to upgrade my laptop to 7 anytime soon...)

Just to clarify for any others reading this, WLM 2010 (to be released as WLM 2011) is compatible with Windows Vista and 7, those on XP will have to stay with WLM 2009.

Wileyska, if you're a student (school or university), or know someone who is, you might want to consider upgrading to Windows 7 using http://www.theultimatesteal.com as this will let you get Windows 7 Pro (and/or Office 2010) for a VERY reduced price, if money is the issue ;)
RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by Wileyska on 06-30-2010 at 05:46 PM

Money is not the issue! I don't want to change my laptop yet and by doing what you suggest will be the easy way out!

It was working and now it is not, there has to be a fix for this.

I hate Vista, and I am still not looking to change my laptop that works perfectly fine, except for this issue just to jump on a Windows 7 OS that can actually bring me lots of other issues on what I do.

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by djdannyp on 06-30-2010 at 07:09 PM

You don't have to change your laptop.  Switching to Windows 7 won't cause more problems and it will enable you to use the new Messenger.

If you're reluctant to do that, then re-installing XP on your computer may provide a fix......from the looks of it you've tried so many things that it may now just be a permanently corrupted thing, there's no logical reason for those display issues.

RE: I can't sign in on the new Messenger Live by CookieRevised on 06-30-2010 at 08:10 PM

Those display issues can be caused by bad/wrong video drivers and/or tools that some video driver manufacters automatically install (but are completely unneeded)...

nVidea is one of the biggest culprints for such stuff.
