Well, the world cup is finally here (about 15 hours for the first match!), so i figured we should start clean with a new thread so you can post your teams results, opinions and such.

Have fun, can't wait to see Mexico v/s South Africa ;o

RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by blessedguy on 06-11-2010 at 12:43 AM

Won't have classes next Tuesday [June 15th, Tuesday or Thursday? Never get it right :(] because of Brazil x N. Korea game.

Can't wait for Brazil x Portugal :P [June 25th]

RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by djdannyp on 06-11-2010 at 06:10 AM

I'm missing England-USA to go to a concert :(.  Planning to Sky+ the game, avoid the score and watch it when we get back!

So excited for this tournament, got 2 bets on the opening weekend's fixtures:

France to beat Uruguay
Argentina to beat Nigeria
Germany to beat Australia
Italy to beat Paraguay

(£1 returns £8.25)

South Korea to win/draw vs Greece
Mexico to win/draw vs South Africa
Holland to win/draw vs Denmark
England to win/draw vs USA

(£1 returns £3.50)

Fingers crossed!!

RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by wacky on 06-11-2010 at 02:40 PM

I'm currently taking a summer class and my teacher said we might go to the hispanic part of the city to watch a game. I'm not normally into the World Cup and all, but I think it would be fun because of the ambiance (plus, I do like soccer, just never got into the World Cup cuz Canada sucks :chrongue:)

Terribly dissapointed by the England game. Not really going to have a go at Green though, the player shouldn't of been able to strike just outside the box in the first place and even though we did concede we should of scored again, the draw cannot be pinned only on his mistake.

Bring on the next game.

He isn't watching it just because i am aussie. He is watching it because we were debating who was going to win :P Chrono said Australia has little chance.

I have to wake up at 4am to watch it :(

What? Are you kidding?
Not only his mistake?
That was a ''routine'' shot, there are lots of shots like that in games to test the goalkeeper

Just watch Argentina's game, Lio Messi had lots of shots (harder ones) and Nigerias keeper did a GREAT job

So, its Green's fault... England deserved to win :P

Agreed entirely, that was definitely a routine save for Green and he messed it up.  To be honest, Joe Hart should have started....in the pre-tournament friendlies he played the most minutes and was the only one of the three not to concede....it's a no brainer!

At least we didn't lose and now we're past the hardest test in the group and should qualify alright, but we'll really have to step it up to get past any higher class of opposition

RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by djdannyp on 06-13-2010 at 09:30 PM

Germany looked frightening tonight!  That's the best display of the tournament so far, by quite a long way....and Australia are a pretty decent side too.  Never a red card for Cahill, hopefully that suspension will get rescinded

RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by Justin on 06-13-2010 at 09:37 PM

Fuck, the only match I've missed so far and it appears to be the best.
Oh well, Netherlands v Denmark tomorrow, should be a very good game. Netherlands & Spain are my favourites to win it.

Correct, Germany was way better then Australia today

The team cracked under the pressure of the hype.

Also you are correct that i won't be running down the street screaming "GERMANY SUCKS" but i guarantee about 50,000 aussies will while chasing Germans living here :P

sometimes that Helps a team improve, look at James Hirds line about the lack of play in Essendon team back about 3 or 4 weeks ago, crtisism helps a team improve when there Down, the fans expected more than what they got an they were let down,. Australia did not score at all, when ya think of it all those Aussies that paid to fly to watch the Game in person have a joilly good reason to do what there doing now.
RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by blackjack on 06-14-2010 at 01:20 PM

Netherlands 2 - Denmark 0

First was an own goal, 2nd by Kuyt

:P

RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by djdannyp on 06-14-2010 at 01:29 PM

I was really expecting a lot more from Holland......no-one's besides Germany has been that impressive so far......Argentina were definitely a bit of a letdown.....and England/France also failed to impress.

Hoping for more from Italy, Spain, Brazil & Portugal

The Brazil goal was amazing, as expected.

RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by Spunky on 06-15-2010 at 10:51 PM

North Korea played a good game though despite not being as skilled. The defence was almost rock solid. Lucky first goal and I think that shook their confidence.

I believe when we scored the 1st goal, Koreans started attacking to tie the match. They were sure they couldn't win, so they kept defending while it was tied, and they were pretty satisfied with that.

If Koreans were to attack as often as a regular team, it could have ended like 4x0, 4x1.

RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by Chrono on 06-16-2010 at 01:16 AM

i agree with chancer, North korea didnt play well at all. Did you watch the same match than me? :P
Brazil started well, but couldnt manage to score more goals. It wasnt a great game overall imo.

Or if you can find a working UK Proxy then it'll be live on the BBC or ITV websites

Chile played a good game, but that guy sanchez is a selfish bastard lol, he could make 2 passes for goal and ruined it :P

And spain... damn im so pissed of... they played very good, touching ball making passes, But the other team was only defending, im highly dissapointed

Its incredible, only one good game the first round, Germany

Yeah, tbh he used to do that all the time in the past, eventually he learnt to play as a team. Today he clearly wanted to be the star though ¬_¬. Still, with all the dribling he does, we get a lot of free kicks cause of defenders being annoyed, pay attention to that in the next game :P

Yep, switzerland simply wanted a tie and ended up winning. Spain played WAY better, but the goals is what counts at the end of the match :P

You just wait for it.......Mexico vs Uruguay WILL be a draw, that way they both guarantee qualifying and France won't be able to do anything to get through

And whilst I don't condone match fixing....justice would be done...

Slovenia    SVN            4
USA            USA            2
England    ENG            2
Algeria    ALG            1

On Next Game England HAS to win

USA has to lose or score less goals than England (If they win against Slovenia)

I was supporting England all the way, its a big dissapointment..

So if England wins next game, they would have 5 points, Slovenia 4.. lets hope USA loses or doesnt score more goals...

Im So pissed about that damn referee, specially about Kaka being red carded

Now he losses the chance to play against Portugal, i wanted to see that match, specially Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka trading jerseys at the end of the match.

No way a red card for Kaka....and he's in my fantasy league tea too :@

I have no words for how disappointing England were too....we really need to get ourselves into shape!  No-one's really excelling so far at this tournament....if we can just pull it together then we'd have a fighting chance!

Stupid was the referee, that shouldn't have validated the 2nd goal, red carded Kaká, and should have distributed a bunch of yellow cards since the first half.
This was his 1st WC game, and hopefully, the last.

During the post-game transmission, we Brazilians were offered the elegant image of Galvão Bueno (CALA A BOCA GALVÃO!) scratching his balls LIVE! It was epic. So far nobody has uploaded to youtube, but I believe someone will sooner or later.

Good game, specially the second half

Finally a game which lived up to expectations!  I'm all for the shocks (especially New Zealand!) but it's good to see some things going to plan!

Awesome performance by Portugal......it's still anyone's guess who's gonna go all the way though

im glad we won, i hope all those teams that play so defensively (like switzerland) get out of the tournament :P It's their fault that this world cup's been so boring :dodgy:

Nice match from Portugal, never expected so many goals :P

The problem with Chile's been the lack of goals. We created about 20 chances this match (according to fifa.com), and we only scored once. This is due to Suazo being injured, he's our main forward and pretty much THE man who can score any chance he gets. He played today for the first time in 2 months, but only till half time and he sucked :P

i hope he gets better, without him we're kinda screwed. he's not a star, but knows how to get the ball into the net. After all, he was the top scored in the south american qualifications tournament, over players like Messi and Luis Fabiano :P

i hope that (IF we make it to the round of 16) we wont have to play against Brazil, we'd be dead if so :P

No offense, but Americans have no authority to discuss football.
I still believe Spain will not qualify for the next round.
France scored for the 1st time. I wanted them to go home without scoring :(
I feel sad for S. Africa. If they had played the other matches as they're doing today...

Racist much?

Didn't you bother watching the Confederations Cup?  Where they beat the European champions and were leading Brazil for 65 minutes and only lost with 6 minutes left?  Sure, football might not be their number one sport, but it's developing VERY well over there considering the competition it has from the "Big Four".  He's entitled to his opinion just as much as you are
RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by Chancer on 06-22-2010 at 05:24 PM

I was just mocking him. I believe the "No offense" made it look more serious, and I was too lazy to add and ironic emoticon...
Now I've searched, but still can find and appropriate emoticon, and I gotta go to college have another test, so just forget it.
Maybe later I'll write about the huge development of US team since 90's (not ironic this time :P).

Germany vs England

Now, lets bet for england to win :P
RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by Justin on 06-24-2010 at 12:16 AM

England have a great team full of stars, but they have awful chemistry when they play together.

France were never going to get through. For one reason Domenech. They had a great team but it has gone to waste. I know people are saying it's 'justice' for Ireland that they went out but to be fair, France would have beaten them on penalties. But yes they should of had that opportunity.

Spain are my favourites to win it. I know people say they 'choke' but this year could be their year. They certainly have the team to do it.

Argentina also have a great team maybe the best in the competition but I don't think they'll win it, I'm still not convinced with Maradonna as manager, he treats his players great and they've done very well so far, but I think if they came up against a big team they'd get out played.

I'd love the Netherlands to win it, but sadly their defence isn't on par with their attack and they'll suffer quite a lot from it. Especially when they come up against another highly attacking team.

These are my opinions on the teams I've most watched over the past year or so. I've watched other teams but can't really comment on them because I don't think I've watched them enough to have a solid opinion on them.

RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by djdannyp on 06-24-2010 at 02:54 PM

Looks like Italy are crapping out.....set to finish BOTTOM of a group with Paraguay, Slovakia and New Zealand!

I'm looking forward to England-Germany on Sunday, always great to renew old rivalries, especially in the World Cup.  It's a young German team and as the Serbia game showed, they're not infallable....they didn't exactly coast past Ghana either...we shall see.

RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by RaPLeX on 06-24-2010 at 04:36 PM

Argentine is favorite for the cup..

RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by djdannyp on 06-24-2010 at 04:49 PM

Actually, Brazil are the current favourites ;)

Brazil 7/2
Argentina 9/2
Spain 5/1
Holland 6/1
Germany 10/1
England 10/1

Very disappointed in Italy going out, makes it easier for us of course :P.  I'm sure they'll be a BIG restructuring of their team and they'll be back stronger in 2 years like Germany have been this year after getting a fresh influx of players,

RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by matty on 06-24-2010 at 05:23 PM

As long as they keep a clean sheet I don't care.....got a Swiss defender in my Fantasy League team for today.....could've done without Spain conceding either....at least I have Villa ;)

RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by Chrono on 06-25-2010 at 08:32 PM

Spain 2 - 1 Chile, we didnt do that bad with one less man :P

We made it to round of 16. Sadly, we play against Brasil. That's really unlucky, playing against Spain and then against Brasil, both favorites :P It was either Brasil or Portugal, so it was gonna be a difficult match  either way lol

RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by djdannyp on 06-27-2010 at 03:57 PM

Absolute disgrace.  The defending was abysmal, they failed to take chances and just didn't put in the performance when it mattered.

Yes, the goal-line technology issue rears its head again, but anyone claiming that's the sole reason we lost is deluded.  It was a contributing factor....had the game finished 2-1, then yes, perhaps more blame could be put on it, but we simply weren't good enough

Guaranteed these will all be scoring a shit load of goals back in the Premiership.

True, many Dutchies already feared Brazil even before the group matches started. And even though we haven't lost any match for something like 20+ in a row now, and won 8 in a row... we're not playing *that* great.

But it's not like we don't have any chance either, we'll see :).
RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by djdannyp on 06-30-2010 at 10:26 AM

I think that three of the quarters are properly in the balance...in a one-off game, anything could happen.  Spain are sure to beat Paraguay, but the other 3 semi places are totally up for grabs.

I think they could be cagey affairs, like Spain-Portugal last night.  I'd prefer if it they weren't, it's always nice to watch good football

Not anymore :P  That didn't last long, haha.

Was very impressed with Holland's comeback, I'm sure they'll be WAY too strong for the winner of Uruguay/Ghana......whichever of those makes it will still be able to say that they've reached a World Cup semi-final, which for teams ranked 16th and 32nd in the world is no mean feat!

I'm betting on an Argentina-Holland final.....now THAT would be some sexy football!

This Germany team will be amazing no doubt about that, but I don't think that their complete yet, by Euro 2012 they'll be the best in the World.
I still think Brazil, Spain, Holland and even Argentina [wrong manager] are better than Germany at the moment.

4-0. Lovely :P

As I mentioned in the shoutbox yesterday, I'm all for Germany since Brazil lost :P

Argentina just got pwnt.. :p Germany all the way I guess.. they've performed well and I've had a feeling they would win since they beat England :p

It would all be so much different if not for that disallowed goal.. I guess Argentina would have pwnt England anyway :p

overall it wasn't a good world cup: referees sucked, the jabulani sucked, half european teams sucked (even teams that are supposed to be part of the best, like england, france, italy...), stadiums usually werent full, stupid vuvuzelas :dodgy:, etc.

Meh.

A few of the referees sucked, by and large they didn't make any huge mistakes (and if they did it was stuff that video replays could've EASILY cleared up.

The ball didn't suck either.....this happens every single tournament that everyone complains about the ball, it's just an excuse.  Look at the hit from Van Bronckhorst......it didn't move in the air in the slightest, it's no different to any other ball.  They've been using in it Germany for over 6 months and we've heard nothing about it.

Half the European teams did suck.  Italy were too old, England were too scared, France were just plain crap :P

Stadiums not being full is disgusting.....if the WC is in England in 2018 I can't imagine there would be a seat spare for ANY game.  I for one would go to any game.....I'd go to North Korea-New Zealand if it was on.....it's the WORLD CUP.....doesn't matter if it's Brazil-Spain or the two worst teams in it....the World Cup final or a random group game....having it in your country is a privilege and I think the South African public have let their country down by not attenting in huge numbers (seeing as they had the easiest access to ridiculously cheap tickets.....I don't see them being that cheap over here!)

And yes.....the vuvuzelas do get a bit annoying, but it's a cultural thing.....no different to the drumming at English games, the flares at Italian games.....it wasn't as bad as everyone made out...for us at least, for the players it may have been a different story, but it was the same for all of them anyway.......and yeah, I'm pretty sure they'll be infecting the European game in the months to come :P.  Borussia Dortmund have already banned them in view of this......and I think other teams have plans to sell branded ones in their club shops.
RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by Menthix on 07-09-2010 at 11:36 AM

* Menthix blames half empty stadiums on the Fifa

There are shitloads of Dutchies who want to go see the final, even if it costs them like 2400euro just to be there for a day and a half. But the Fifa made 500 more tickets available (at least 5000 people preregistered) and they announced this so extremely late now there isn't any available flight left to South Africa anymore. They already added 4 extra flights :(.

So the Netherlands now has 500 tickets which nobody can use, unless there are Dutchies who took the gamble and already flew over without tickets.

As far as the Fifa is concerned almost every game is probably sold out. It is the failure of distributing those sold tickets to actual people.

RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by djdannyp on 07-09-2010 at 12:36 PM

Bit of a risk, but you could've gone to SA and ask a local to go buy tickets for you, I bet there's thousands available for locals at peanuts

yeah like england's goal against germany, or the first goal of argentina against mexico 8-). overall there were too many bad referees, the fifa should try to make a more decent selection of referees for the cup in the future imo. But yeah, i guess that's something that will always happen, until they implement replays or w/e.

Many goalkeepers complained about the ball before the world cup started, that's not something that happenes every tournament :P They went as far as calling it a volley ball (again, before the tournament started). Casillas (Spain), LLoris (france, Julio cesar (Brazil) were some of the keepers that complained.

The fifa probably thought that with such a ball there'd be more goals but they were clearly wrong :p

I see your point about the Jabulani in that video......but to honest, Ronaldo could do that with the Premier League ball a couple of years ago and no-one complained about that.  It's all about how you hit it......that van Bronckhorst one the other night stayed completely true, didn't dip or swerve or anything

It was a really thrilling end-to-end game actually......living up to the past 3rd/4th place play-offs which have averaged almost 4 goals a game!

I hope it's a precursor to tonight's final being an epic battle!

RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by blessedguy on 07-11-2010 at 04:13 PM

[traveling, btw]

I don't know if that ball sucks or not, I have never used or touched one. But why to change the ball every single worldcup?
Does the Tennis or Volley ones change every world championship?

Hope FIFA learnt the lesson: you can't let the simple video replay tech out because it "would demoralize the referees". Dear FIFA, you seem to be in Soviet Russia. You didn't demoralize the referees, the referees demoralized you! :zippy:

South Africa is harder to reach than Brazil, and is also in a better monetary situation than them, so I guess there won't be a single empty seat in the entire tournament :P

Also, HUP HOLLAND HUP!

[I'm in relative's house because of vacations, but also made it so that we'd watch the finals here :P Complete with a nice barbecue which is why this reply won't be any longer :P]

Spain won :(
I must have a little of Mick Jagger, all the teams I've gone for lost. Also, the game was disappointing and boring for the first 100 minutes, that wasn't footbal.
There was everything: people grabbing the other team, trhowing the ball directly to the goal when returning it to the goalkeeper [should've been to the side], a kick in the chest...

But congrats Spain, you deserve it :P Nice, huh? They never got to the finals and the single time they get to it they win :)

RE: World cup South Africa 2010 by John Anderton on 07-13-2010 at 02:56 AM

De Jong should have received a red. He's one lucky guy..
And yeah, the ref didn't want to ruin the match but tbh, the red should have come a lot earlier the way the Dutch were playing.

Historically though, Howard Webb has always been at the center of things at the BPL. I was surprised to see him at the finals. :p

Edit: Then there was the tackle by Augo (or something) quite early in the game where he went in studs up. A clear red card. Could have broken the guy's leg :-/

Not for the cards. But we should have got a corner. And there apparently was an offside situation just before Spain scored, but they never showed a proper replay of that so I don't know.

De Jong should definitely have been sent off, but Webb was behind the incident, he wouldn't have seen the full effect of it.

I definitely wasn't surprised to see Webb in the final, he's been consistently the best referee we've had in the country for some time (Oh, and it's EPL, not BPL, it's English, not British ;)).  Kinda disappointing to see such a dirty final.....some referees get accused of being card happy, but if anything he was the opposite...tried to keep 11 players on the pitch for as long as possible when there were 3 or 4 others that could've gone before Heitinga (both straight reds and second yellows).  I wonder what the odds will be on a red in the final in 2014 after reds in 2010 and 2006 :P

I thought it was a very tense final....both teams look scared to lose, a start contrast from the 3rd/4th game where both teams looked fired up to win.

@Menthix, yeah, the corner is a sore point...at least you didn't have a goal disallowed ;):P.  It sucks, but these things happen.  The offside was replayed comprehensively on English TV and it was shown that he was in fact just onside.

Bit disappointing as a final really...and a strange tournament in many ways, with lots of big players flopping, but at least it was a new winner and generally a success I think.

Bring on Euro 2012 :D

True. It's the foreign media who are making a huge deal about it :p. Yes 1 or 2 players commented on the ref in interviews on the field just after the match. Can you blame them for that with frustration being that high? But it's not like the Dutch are walking around ready to lynch Webb.

There are walking hundreds of thousands of Dutchies in Amsterdam ready to welcome the team as if they did win :p. Odd situation. Originally the team would only get a boat tour through the canals if they win, with a ceremony after that on Museumplein (big square which holds about 250000 people). If they lost the idea was to only have the ceremony on Museumplein. But because they are still expecting so much people (close to a million) the city decided to do the 2 hour boat tour through the canals anyway. Partly for security reasons so the can spread the people who come to watch through the city :).
