Pidgin questions (if you want nicknames/msn 2011) by gaara20 on 10-22-2010 at 09:03 PM

So ive downloaded Pidgin to my pc, i gotta say im still not used to it. Ive already connected my account and found how to change my name (or at least i think so) in "Accounts" and change name. It says it is how will it display to the other contacts, but my question is, will it show to msn 2011 users? Or the same will happen with the old one meaning that my name in live profile will be the one shown?

Indeed. It doesn't matter what client you use. If your contacts use Live Messenger 2011 they will see your (full) name set in your Windows Live profile.

What protocol version Pidgin uses is irrelevant. Your contacts using Live Messenger 2011 aren't talking to Pidgin for the name. WLM 2011 gets the Windows Live profile name from Microsoft's servers.

ok.
And can i at least speak while im offline in pidgin? In msn 2011 you cant do that.

yup i can still do that. Its still crap that we cant have only the first name.
Also im thinking of getting a gmail account since it isn't connected to live, if i use msn 2009, i can use nicknames and personal messages without worrying about what 2011 users see right? I mean its gmail after all, im sure it wont display my gmail info.
Also what happens if i use 2011 with it? Since you cant put nicknames in this one.

Incorrect. If you want to use your Gmail account with Windows Live Messenger, you will need to register for a Windows Live ID, of which requires a first and last name.

If you really don't want to share your last name with contacts, change it in your profile.

Yes.

Unless you use your GMail address for Google GTalk, but in that case you won't be able to use it to talk to any people using Windows Live Messenger. GTalk and Windows Live are completely separate networks.
