Problem with Custom sounds by pickeringkp on 03-03-2011 at 01:00 AM

Before you tell me to use the search feature, please read this.

I have used the search function, but i've been unable to fix this, even with the new update.

I have un-installed and re-installed both messenger and Plus! multiple times. I have no custom emoticons, so I know that those are not causing interference.

Now, here's my actual problem:

I cannot hear, download, upload, or send any custom sounds (not even the default ones). When I try to download them, they attempt to download the file for about 30 seconds, and then give up.

I cannot seem to be able to connect to the sound server or something (I've had this problem since the last version of plus!)

I'm using windows Vista 32-bit, and Windows Live Messenger 2009.

I'm really wanting to get this fixed :( If you could help that would be extremely awesome.

Can you ping 66.220.17.211?

The other thing I want you to try is seeing if you can randomly download a sound through your browser. Try this URL: http://tinyurl.com/4ol8kfo

As for that tinyurl, I imagine that leads to sounds.msgplus.net, right? I can never seem to reach that page @_@

EDIT: okay, not sure if this could be it or not. I just googled the server address (66.220.17.211) and one of the first results I saw was in relation to MalwareBytes Anti-Malware blocking that for someone. Could that be the problem? Or is this in a previous version, and has been fixed? (Because I do have MBAM)

If MBAM blocks a website, a new software version will not change that. Try disabling MBAM first and try again

I completely removed MBAM and it still didn't work =/

My girlfriend who is a total Tech Geek can't even figure out the problem @_@

The tinyurl redirects to http://66.220.17.211/esnd/snd/random?catId=4&lngId=7

Does your techie girlfriend know how to use Wireshark?

Also, can you check your Windows HOSTS file and see if there are any entries in there in regards to Messenger Plus!? There shouldn't any.
(the HOSTS file is located in %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\)

If he can ping it there wont be. It would show the redirected IP address in the results of the ping.

Do you currently have a firewall enabled?

Sounds like it could be a DNS issue.

Few things I would like you to try:
Open a command prompt and do the following exactly as you see them (and please provide a screenshot or the results of the window after it has completed.

nslookup sounds.msgpluslive.net >> C:\PlusLog.txt
ipconfig /flushdns >> C:\PlusLog.txt
ipconfig /release >> C:\PlusLog.txt
ipconfig /renew >> C:\PlusLog.txt
nslookup sounds.msgpluslive.net >> C:\PlusLog.txt

(You can attach the file  C:\PlusLog.txt to your post to make it easier)
