[SOLVED] A Windows Explorer wndw opening at the start of the PC after installing Plus by Wallpaperman on 06-25-2011 at 09:35 AM

Hello,

Yesterday, I updated with the new Plus! 5 version, but now since then when I start my computer, I have always this window appearing.

This is the windows explorer window where is located MSN (not Messenger Plus). C:\Program Files\Messenger
This is just opening... why and how to remove this?

Searched on the options of both MSN and Messenger Plus and found nothing.

Anyone can explain why is this doing this and how to stop this from happening? This is not hurting or anything, just annoying...

I've never heard of this before. Does it do the same with Plus! uninstalled?

I haven't tried to uninstall Plus. I fear that if I do, I'll loose my settings, could be more annoying that this window...

If it happens without even starting Windows Live Messenger than it is something to do with Windows itself, not with Windows Live Messenger nor Messenger Plus!.

I suggest you check out the RUN registry settings for any abnormality:
1) Open your Registry Editor (Start > Run > regedit.exe  )
2) Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
3) Check if there is a registry key containing that c:\program files\messenger path. If so, remove it.
4) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
5) Check if there is a registry key containing that path. If so, remove it.

Also check the Startup folder in your Windows Start menu.

The uninstaller will always ask you if you want to keep your settings (and scripts) or not.

So, uninstalling will not remove your settings if you unselect "remove all users' preferences and files" in the uninstaller wizard (second page).

Hello!

Thank you!
I tried the startup thing.
I typed "msconfig" in the Run command and then, looked for the processes...

I found 2 "background" processes, for msnmsg.exe and for Plus as well. I uncheked both and the problem is solved.

Thanks for the help!

Problem not solved :P

First of all, never use MSConfig to disable startup processes. The changes are not permanent and you actually change your standard startup configuration (which might include much more things) to an so called 'alternative' startup configuration. To make permanent changes in regards to startup processes without changing your entire Windows startup config you must make the changes yourself in the registry editor directly, or either use a tool like AutoRuns.

Also see CookieRevised's reply to Removing items from "msconfig" for more details.

As such, I highly recommend you to open MSConfig again and undo the changes you did, and then put Windows again in normal startup mode (in XP: see first tab named "General" in the MSConfig utility).

-------

Second, by disabling those two processes the problem is not solved. You simply worked around the problem. To pinpoint the real culprint you must disable one process at a time to determine which is the one responsible.

Please do this and report back which one is at fault.

Also, it is strange that it does not happen when you manually start Messenger. This can mean that the startup entries themselfs are maybe malformed (eg: quote characters are out of place).

As such, can you post the _exact_ and complete entries and values you disabled. Thus, including all characters like spaces and quotes, etc.

Hmmmmm.... I'll have a look...
What I unchecked were these:

quote:
C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus!\PlusService.exe
"C:\Program Files\Messenger\Msmsgs.exe" /background
