O.P. RE: re-name display pics?
my idea made it to MSN :D
quote:
Hello,

Thank you for contacting MSN Messenger Service.

I am writing in response to your inquiry on how you can rename
your display picture in MSN Messenger. Changing the display
picture's name after uploading is not currently available in MSN
Messenger. I suggest that you rename the picture first after
saving it on your computer and then upload it as your display
picture.

However, being able to modify your display picture is a great
idea and would greatly improve our services. I forwarded your
suggestion to the product team, which carefully reviews these
suggestions and considers them for future releases.

Should you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to
write us back.

RE: re-name display pics?
The directory you're looking for is the same that holds the configcache.xml (obsolete now):

for XP, Win2k, NT:
\Documents and Settings\<windows accountname>\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\<your_MSNID_number>
for 9x (with profiles):
\WINDOWS\Profiles\<windows accountname>\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\<your_MSNID_number>
for 9x (without profiles):
\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\<your_MSNID_number>
in short:
%appdata%\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\<your_MSNID_number>

In that directory you'll find some subdirectories:

* Backgrounds
you'll find all your backgrounds here.
They're named like TFR<number>.tmp or TFR<number>.dat
but actually they are just JPGs or PNGs with the extension renamed...

* CustomEmoticons
you'll find all your custom emoticons here.
They're named like TFR<number>.tmp or TFR<number>.dat
but actually they are just PNGs with the extension renamed...

EDIT/UPDATE: ...or GIFs when they are animated.

* UserTile
you'll find all your display pictures here.
They're named like TFR<number>.tmp or TFR<number>.dat
but actually they are just PNGs with the extension renamed...

(The renaming: I refered to this a couple of times on the forums already, messenger converts every emoticon or display picture to a PNG... --> also see the threads about animated GIFs in display pictures or custom animated emoticons)

Old thread that mentioned this already:
http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=16...d=149381#pid149381

The info about <your_MSNID_number> can be found again on the forums:
http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=15519
http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=15...d=132217#pid132217

EDIT: NOTE: This post was made back in the time when Windows Live Messenger didn't existed yet. The location of the object storage has changed, although in general the principle about the stuff listed here stays the same...

edit: updated url to new host link

RE: re-name display pics?
Yes and no :)

I have .tmp's in the directory, but since I installed 6.1 and added new DP's they are .dat's....
So it seems that .tmp was used in 6.0, and .dat is used in 6.1
(It still reads the .tmp's though, kind-of downwards compatible)
(.dat seems also more logical then .tmp, cause tmp means temporary, and they are not exactly temporary aren't they? :))

Oh, and also here is more info about the encrypted map.dat file:

RE: re-name display pics?
It is always there. Without it, MSN Messenger will not function. However it is well possible that the directory is hidden. So, make sure you've enabled "Show hidden files and folders" and disabled "Hide protected system files". To do so, go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab.

CookieRevised, you will need to update your info,

8.1 and future builds will change where this info is stored.

/application data/microsoft/msn messenger is now redundant

the new object data store is
/local settings/application data/microsoft/messenger
