RE: File Transfer Plus 1.0 BETA
About the ports. Can you make it so that the plugin itself opens a port (within a specified range) and closes it afterwards?

Haven't tried this myself, but for those behind a NAT or Router it sounds like you need to use port-forwarding to open the relevant ports on your NAT/Router.
Your manual should tell you how to do it.

Interesting sounding plugin tho, will definatly try it myself.

Cookie I really thought you knew that this is not possible this has to be done manually, if this could be done automatically what would the protection in closing Ports be?????

This sounds like a cool plugin, and can't wait until the next release...So I can use this.... But that you left out the "Type own IP" really dissapoints me... but hey, keep up the good work.....

this is possible.... this is what many programs do.... and this is exactly why some firewalls (or internet security programs) popup a message like "do you want this programs to be able to access this or that"....
Also, uPnP works this way...

I'll add an external IP detection mechanism for routers and NATs in the next release or, at least, a way to set your IP manually as a workaround.
Its because it sends your local IP eg 192.168.x.x which of course means other people can't connect to your machine because they don't know where to find it :)

The only thing I would say with setting the IP manually, is that not everyone has a static IP, especially those people on dial up modems, which means they would have to keep on changing it.

And its those dial up people I see needing this plugin the most, in particular the resume function. Hopefully the external IP detection can be done automatically somehow *-)

Well i don't think you need ports open to download. Or am i wrong?
The sender is actually the server of the transfer, so you must have an open port when you send files, but that is not needed when you receive files.

That usually happens when the firewall detects the "open" request by the application to the winsock API. For example, the firewall in WinXP Service Pack 2 already asks if you want to open ports for the plugin. I'll search if there are more APIs to help opening ports in the firewalls.

About the NAT problem, the only way for the plugin to detect automatically your external IP address is to get it from a special website that tells the IP of your connection (it's the same approach of those external IP detectors plugins). It's not hard to make it, however it's not 100% reliable since the website may me down sometimes.

Another possibility is to allow the user to add a hostname from dynamic IP services such as no-ip.com, so the plugin gets it by querying the hostname's IP.

The third (and worst) option is to manually enter your IP. I think I'll add all these options, so it's more flexible.

Thanks for all your feedback :)
