O.P. How to turn off speakers?

Another n00bish question...but the last one i promise.

Whenever I put headphones into my computer, instead of the sound from the speakers turning off  they remain on. Instead the headphones just boom out music terrifically loud. So both the headphones and the speakers work at the same time.

Which as you can imagine is annoying as i have to keep fiddling with the sound on the pc so that its quiet from the speakers but slightly loud from the headphones.

Anyway to turn off the speakers manually for about an hour and then turn back on..?

the speakers are built into the screen and theres no power button. the only thing i can do ive found is pull the speaker wire out of the back of the motherboard, which as you can imagine is annoying.

also annoying is when i speak into the microphone i can hear myself..which is beyond weird.

any ideas? you'll become a legend if you do.

For the microphone, just doubleclick on the sound icon in your taskbar, then check Mute under the Microphone column
