O.P. iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error
Ok I have had this nano since Christmas last year, it has worked perfectly fine through multiple versions of iTunes and the iPod software. Out of the blue, when I tried to plug the iPod in the other day I received an error (shown below) saying how the USB item was not recognised. It had full battery at the time and iTunes did not connect to the iPod at all.

I have tried:
  • Trying different USB ports
  • Following "the 5 R's" from the apple site. The only one of these I didn't try was impossible since it requires the iPod to be connected :undecided:
  • System restore to before the problem started (I was getting desperate here:P)
  • Searching google for 3 days... I cannot find an identical problem with a solution

I've been reading around and the solution for most people was to update the drivers for your motherboard.

Do you know what motherboard you have? If so, update the drivers.

I know my motherboard is an Acer L4S5MG/651+ motherboard. I don't know how to check if my motherboard drivers are up to date or how to check them though. (Device manager?)

There might be a fault with the ipod.  Probably a wise idea to send it to get fixed (or replaced).  It's free because it's still under warrenty and its also under 6mnths so you don't even have to pay for postage and handling.

Maybe try it in a different computer as well.

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/ <-- work through them.

If that fails, http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/. Enter your details, serial number etc and you'll be able to take it to an Apple store or authorised reseller/service center to have it repaired or replaced.

Yes I have already tried all of them bar reformtting iPod to the original forms (ie wiping everything). As I said before I cannot do one of those "R's" because it requires the iPod being recognised to work.

I'm going to try the cord of a friend's iPod when possible otherwise I will check with the apple store you linked...

maybe your iPod is bricked on it's dock connector, get it a 'medical check up'.

I took it over to a mates house and plugged it into his computer (with no iTunes/iPod software installed). His computer had no problem recognising that it was an iPod connected leaving me with the conclusion that my USB drives are not working (but only for the iPod:undecided:). I am going to check all my drivers are updated and if that fails I will take the computer in for a checkup as soon as possible.

Thats a good idea and maybe you can also do a system restore to a day before it started to happen (this will also get rid of some stuff that you might have done since the problem started).  Hope things work out, keep us posted.

RE: iPod nano getting "Unknown device" error
Generally if you get this error it is one of two things

1) The drivers are not up to date and or corrupted. You need to look at the manufacturer of the boards website to download updated drivers.

2) The USB Controller on the iPod is foobared and needs to be replaced. Easiest way to do this is just plug the iPod into another computer. Same error its the controller, no error its the drivers.

---------------------

Edit just read your one post

I am looking for updated drivers as we speak.

Doesn't look like there is a USB driver update available.

Check your PM I will help you when I get back home.
