O.P. need some help finding a laptop
mine broke recently, and it will apparently cost over $300 to repair. since there is no point in wasting that much on a 2 year old crappy laptop, I though I might as well buy a new one. I have been searching for over an hour now, but can't find anything decent with my limited budget.

Budget: ~$700 CAD, will go up to $800
Display: 15.4, larger prefered
HDD: 80 gb is fine
CPU: 1.8GHz or more, 64bit, dual core (preferably amd)
RAM: 1gb is fine
DVD: Dual dvd burner
Mem Card Reader: n/a
Webcam: n/a
GPU: Something that will run compiz
Audio: crappy onboard is fine
Modem: Preferably
WLAN: b/g
USB: Minimum 3 ports
OS: preferably none

Other: nothing too fat or ugly, and preferably not online either. shipping is expensive and i hate waiting for the package.

The closest thing I found is this, but its a 32bit intel @ 1.6ghz. otherwise very good :)

this site will let you pick options for each component (like you've listed) in a very easy manner

while you may not be able to buy off it (it's an English site) it will let you find suitable laptops which you can then find in a shop or on a website in the country you live in

why would you want something that could run some inferior linux product when you're going to be using the superior OS, Windows?

/take flame_bait

I think you're looking at at least £450 for a 64-bit processor. It may be cheaper in the States / Canada, but it's ~$900USD. You'll have to work out $CAD yourself... :)

Try eBay if all else fails.

Also, why an 64bit processor when you're going to have only 1GB of RAM?

Even if he has a 64bit processor it doesn't mean he will use a 64bit OS (I for example have a 64bit processor with 2GB of ram, and I suppose you are referring to the 4GB limit of 32bit operating systems). Many of the processors today are 64bit even if they are used with 32bit operating systems.

He said he would prefer AMD, doesn't have to be.

Anyway, I can't help you much, but try going for HP or Toshiba maybe.. At least from experience, HP ain't bad with laptops at all. (Vista is a freakin' pain though, so good luck trying to get rid of it for Linux)

Laptops that are preinstalled with Vista (or some other Microsoft crap OS) may have a hard time or impossible to put a different OS on it. HP doesn't have that restriction, I know that much.. I plan to go back to XP for a while before I give Linux a go. Just a tip: make a recovery disc as a safe precaution.

Overlooking both, they seem to have almost everything you want (like 2USB instead of 3 etc...)

Both look good :p

PS: Give me your old laptop, I'll try and fix it :D
