That happens to me all the time. I think my contacts are online and there offline.

I'm thinking it's a bug :P

It is a limitation i believe, i dont remember :P

it happens with contacts on desktop sometimes, reopening a conversation fixes the ''bug''

But in tabs, i dont know =/

It's a 'golden oldie', which Patchou has attempted to fix numerous times. Each fix never quite works.

Yeah for me, instead of it showing as online but they're offline... they're online but are shown as offline :P

Why not just remove the icons? It is better not to have icons instead of having the wrong ones.

unfortunately, it's a bug caused by messages not being sent internall by Messenger to Plus!. Still an on-going "to fix".
