O.P. multi platform disk imager
so.. i have a virtual machine with free bsd on it  the vm also has an other 8gb virtual drive attached to it, what i want to do is get some software to back up the bsd drive then run something that reads the same format on windows and extract the image to the second drive in my windows 98 machine then boot into bsd and remove the windows partition, anyone know any cross platform backup software i could use?

vmware lets you mount vm hard drive images as actual drives...

windows doesn't let me read drives which are not fat32/ntfs so it doesn't really achieve anything,
i need...
a way to image the bsd drive
a way to restore the image from dos or windows 98,
and i'll work the rest out when i get there

yes, the physical computer is running 98 no floppy, no cd, no usb support(unless u have the driver) even my usb floppy won't work, the only way i can get stuff onto it is via the network,

as the computer doesn't have any drives using a virtual machine made sence

how is that relevant to the question Jarrod was asking?

anyway, back on topic.
you can assign your second physical drive/partition to your VM instead of a virtual drive. After that you can install "ubuntu" or any other OS to that drive, avoiding the need to copy your virtual drive image to your second drive.
Now, I'm going to assume that the second "drive" is actually a second partition on the same drive your win98 installation is on.
From this point, google for a way to add your new bsd partition to your boot.ini (or install another boot manager from windows(!) to avoid problems) to accomplish a dual boot configuration.

NOTE: make sure your bsd installation also supports your physical hardware, not just your virtual hardware.
