IIRC It's a windows service, just check to see if it is installed in Add/Remove Programs. If it is, then try to manually get it to run by going typing 'services.msc' into the 'run' dialog.

If any part of this doesn't make sense, don't hesitate to ask for clarification :).

IIRC is an acronym for If I Can Recall, the thing you are looking for is (guessing by the other posts) Apple Mobile Device Support.

okay, thank you.   i'm updating my itunes+quick time to the last version so that i can get the Apple Mobile Device Support.... will post after good results :)

Does anything actually appear on the iPod's screen when you plug it in?
Does the device appear in device manager?
- Yes: Do the drivers appear to be installed?
- No: Is your USB port working correctly?
