Custom nicknames still exist. I don't use them myself, but it would be very odd if those don't carry over.

No, Dragunov confuses display names with nicknames. (Hence why it is always important to use the proper namings of things)

What he means is that your own 'display name', the name you have set for yourself, will be reverted to your real name, the name you have set in your online Windows Live Profile. So instead of seeing "alegator", your contacts, and strangers!, will now see your real name (unless they have set a custom nickname for you - but even that does not prevent them from knowing and seeing your real name).

see Taking away display names is HORRIBLE.

I can already say that something like that will never happen. It's the exact reason (even more now than it used to be) as explained here:
