Very possible, this problem has been reported by 2 people before. See Plus messenger v5 on WLM 2011 randomly crashing. The developers are looking into it and working on a fix.

A firewall could block the connection, although the standard Windows firewall shouldn't do that. But even if your firewall is indeed blocking the connection, it shouldn't cause a crash

Could it be that Plus! is using a synchronous call to the servers? No connection would mean it would never return and cause WLM's process to go into a state of eternal waiting... Is there any way to check this with a packet sniffer?

Not sure. But I had a mail conversation with Jieff yesterday, they are working on a fix.

I was also experiencing the same problem, so had to temporarily uninstall Plus!

I just have Windows Security Essentials.

When I get a moment I'll reinstall it and try to troubleshoot the cause.
