need help! i am new here & my problem is i can install the software but i can't log in to my account with live messenger. what to do?

Installation goes ok, everything works except if I try to send a wink, messenger shuts down and restarts. I do not have the sweetIm  or smiley programs. I have reinstalled numerous times, same result. I am using the latest versions of plus and messenger.
