Is this a proper WLM i got in my inbox? by Skitz on 01-08-2006 at 07:19 AM

i receive this in my inbox couple days ago.

i attach screenshot of it

is it proper release of WLM beta?
dont i need to sign up with my email with a ID code or something?

i initially got an ID code to test WLM but was on vacation and by the time i got back from vacation, it expired. so maybe they gave me one as a replacement or does other ppl got this too?

and also, if i DL it and give to my friend, will she be able to install it on her comp and use it or does she need to receive this invite in her inbox from microsoft herself?

Yes, that is a real WLM invite. Your friend can download it from the link you will get, but she will be unable to sign in, she needs to be invited to sign in. You will proabbly get some invites in the future, or you can ask around, there's plenty going around right now.

Yes it is, from the looks of it.

cool cool

what do ya mean my friend "can download it from the link you will get"

so since i got an email from microsoft, i will be able to sign into WLM? but since my friend didnt get an invite from MS, she wont be able to?
is that what you mean?

and how does one get invites? do they show up in WLM itself?

Check and double check the link in the mail. And make absolutely sure the link points to a site from microsoft!!!

Fake mails like that are ciculating around and point towards virus downloads, and thus:

you are not able to tell if it is legit or not by simply looking at it or showing it like that

(such mails are very easly spoofed).

Yes, that is what i mean. When you recieve invites, you'll get an email in the inbox of the account that you accepted the invitation with.

Anyone can download the app but those not invited to the program cannot sign in to wlm legally.

As for the other thing, im not too sure so i would prefer not to speculate :)

This screenshot does indeed look like a genuine Windows Live Messenger invite message. But yes, like CookieRevised stated, make sure the link does point a Microsoft website to ensure it is real and not gonna infect your computer.

If it is a authentic email message the link should point to a long URL starting with ideas.live.com and ending with a long GUID number (something like: 0ABBF819CC...).

Jus goto http://www.ideas.live.com/ and try and sign in, if it lets you, you have an invite. If it doesnt, its fake.
