It looks interesting as it seems (to me) to be a list of all the computers that needed repairs or something. It probably isn't, but I was just wondering what it is if not that.

These are work-arounds provided by Microsoft to allow Windows to work on machines which have errors or other faults in the BIOS - although I'm not sure about the "Block Setup on these machines" section.

Linux has options which are similar to these such as -noapic or -acpi=off etc.

In particular I found this machine entry:

These names sound like machine names (eg. you would call your PC "the home PC" etc.).

The stuff just looked a bit unusual in there but I think I've got it now thanks to andrewdodd13.

and why, exactly, would there be a random list of other people's hostnames on a disk that can only be written once?

That's exactly my point. I haven't a clue.

Please keep in mind not all people have the same amount of knowledge as you.

C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\biosinfo.inf

And nor am I an idiot, I just happen to have certain limits to my knowledge. :)

IIRC, that file also appears in /windows/inf, after a stock standard installation.
was put impeccably into words at DebianDay for me last Saturday, by Knut Yrvin of Trolltech - adults try something once, fail, and then are like "ffs this doesn't work". Children try, fail, and then try again, and succeed - maybe on the second, or even fifth retry. But the thing is that they keep at it and overcome the problems in the end.
