Well, Microsoft knows its software but does not know/like its users' demands for the software.  Thus, they tend to add whatever features THEY like and remove whatever features THEY dislike.

But the butterflies/testers represent only a very small number of WLM's userbase. Don't forget that most users don't really care about having a "clean" (insert correct word here) client. Heck, they even removed (increased?) the 5 custom emoticons limit in a message so that Average Joe can now have as CE the full alphabet in dancing letters!
