RE: need some help finding a laptop
HP Pavilion dv6700z series
Found that while looking through HP's entertainment section. If it's still too expensive, HP has a ton of more choices on other laptops. Although, the one I linked you too is somewhat customizable, so you can change the parts on it to what you want.
At any rate, that's just what I found, so there's more choices out there.

Better stack floating point performance? Cleaner virtualisation architecture? Maybe it's something to do with pipeline depth, power usage, or I/O? Maybe it's an ideological thing?
Why 64 bit? Maybe he'd like to be using it once 64 bit applications start coming out?
I saw NewEgg had an awesome Lenovo for US$700 the other day. It's a real shame they don't do international delivery. I was going to hit them up for a shiny new hard drive.
was put impeccably into words at DebianDay for me last Saturday, by Knut Yrvin of Trolltech - adults try something once, fail, and then are like "ffs this doesn't work". Children try, fail, and then try again, and succeed - maybe on the second, or even fifth retry. But the thing is that they keep at it and overcome the problems in the end.

Your guess is as good as mine, I personally prefer Intel myself over AMD.
As for 64-bit technology, I'd have no use for it at the moment. I still hear some drivers and programs don't run properly on 64-bit for whatever reason. (only on a 64-bit OS though, not 32-bit)
Many options for a laptop, it's just a matter of piecing them together to get what you want, for whatever use out of them. Each person has their preference to what they want in a computer.

why do you prefer intel? just because. same with amd for me. and it seems like amd has more 64bit processors than intel (don't quote me on that though). And speaking of 64bit, it's because it's the future, like 32bit surpassed 16, 64 will eventually surpass 32. Buying a 64bit cpu will just help it progress.

Overlooking both, they seem to have almost everything you want (like 2USB instead of 3 etc...)
Both look good
PS: Give me your old laptop, I'll try and fix it
are they 64bit or not? its not as easy to tell as with amd and no, i don't trust you with my laptop ;p

RE: need some help finding a laptop
Couple friends of mine experienced AMD for themselves and quite a bit of their processors overheated. Plus, they told me that AMD is mainly for gaming and not necessarily good at multi-tasking. That's what they told me.
Me personally, I've not had any problems with Intel at all. Grant it though, their celerons suck horribly.. even my P3 (600 MHz at the time) outclassed the Celeron 800 MHz by a long shot.

By the time 64bit takes over 32bit the processor will be out of date anyway

I prefer intel because core wipes the floor with amd's entire lineup? also, all the core processors are 64-bit. also, 64-bit serves no real benefit other than to support >~3gb of memory. in fact, 64-bit applications will use more memory than the exact same application compiled as 32-bit, because pointers have to be twice as long.
