O.P. Think twice about bringing your iPod next time you're travelling
http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/story.html?id=...-bf4f-47f6fc96ce5e
quote: Copyright deal could toughen rules governing info on iPods, computers
OTTAWA - The federal government is secretly negotiating an agreement to revamp international copyright laws which could make the information on Canadian iPods, laptop computers or other personal electronic devices illegal and greatly increase the difficulty of travelling with such devices.
The deal could also impose strict regulations on Internet service providers, forcing those companies to hand over customer information without a court order.
Its a pretty long article, but to summarize, boarder guards will have the ability to search digital devices for copyrighted materials if the proposed law as described is passed.
I, for one doubt this will ever happen, sounds like utter bullshit to me.
Anyways, discuss and share opinion
I cannot hear you. There is a banana in my ear.

RE: Think twice about bringing your iPod next time you're travelling
I am going to the US for one month this summer, by myself, and I have already thought about this lol!
Maybe this is why I've bought a lot of CDs recently.

How do they prove you pirated your music or not? For all they know, you could have ripped it yourself from a CD. Just because it doesn't have a DRM doesn't mean it's pirated.
Even if the law went through I wouldn't be worried. There is no way they can prove I have illegally downloaded media on my electronics.

Apart from checking your ISP logs...

So they will hold up a whole plane just for that? Bullshit. Besides, what happens when you have all your network traffic tunnelled and encrypted? Are they going to arrest you/stop you from flying because you are doing that? Of course not.
I am sure that if this bill gets passed none of the security checks will actually search you, waste of time.

True, true. But why would they search EVERYONE's ipods and laptops etc.. it's just not practical, think of the time it would take.

Yes, this the wole problem of this proposed law. It will be up to the border guards at the airport to determine what's legal or not, and it is their discression whether or not they allow you to pass with the electronic goods.
