Ah, that works. Wow.

I'd like it to be in the notification area though! Catch 22. :(

It's not random: the compatibility mode should only be used when the application doesn't run on your current version, as you'll be vunerable to known and unknown issues.

Mynetx is actually a member of these forums and not a member of Windows Live staff or anything.  That recommendation is only a workaround to get the icon back in the system tray (which isn't really that important) but it is NOT recommended as it can cause other issues, such as the one you have just experienced

That is not an official post from The Windows Live Team, rather a post by a forum regular "mynetx". It was written before problems with compatibility mode were discovered, or put a bit better, widely known.

Setting to run under a different version of Windows can break quite a few internal workings of WLM.

I will see if I can contact mynetx to put a warning on the post regarding these issues.

This will not be patched. This is how things are going to work from now on in Windows 7. There is no need for it to be in the system tray as so much more space is now available on the taskbar due to larger monitors and better resolutions, as well as the change to only displaying icons (by default)

[off-topic, kind of]
Not everyone likes the icons without labels, and the Messenger + Mail couple simply takes up a ton of space when showing labels (and I, like many others, won't buy a larger monitor [17'' seems big enough for me] only to have some extra programs shown).
I'd also love an official way to put Messenger (and Mail) back in the system tray :(

This is just the way Windows is moving. As WLM now expects to be on the taskbar under windows 7, that's where it needs to be. You can always send the team feedback about putting in an option for it, but really there's no need. If you don't have enough space, make your taskbar taller or remove some unused programs from the quicklaunch.

It's not the most elegant solution, but it beats having loads of hidden programs in the system tray and forgetting about them. I really do think eventually the system tray should just go, with a simple program added in to monitor background services with notifications showing above the icon on the taskbar, or if it is not pinned, the clock

I'm stubborn and usually in the minority of people with things like this, but the system tray is outdated and needed an overhaul.

I don't see the problem with Windows 7's icon-only taskbar, it saves so much space and is far better than the old-style. Why would one need a label saying 'Windows Live Messenger' when you can clearly distinguish that from its icon?
