Instead of using netstat, use
TCPView. It's the same but a graphic tool and you'll find the info you're looking for quicker. Just look at the messenger process and see the new connection it makes when the other accepts the file.
However, in the last version of the protocol used by messenger, there's a thing called MSNP2P. Shortly, that is a way of sending files without doing a direct connection with the 2 machines but sending the file through the server so you won't be able to know your contact's IP. This is used when you and your contact are behind a router/nat/firewall.
