A free software may or may not be a bad program. Plus is free, is it bad? Linux is free, is it bad? Well, you can't say yes nor not without trying it. Don't be suspicious of a free OS... for the same reason I could be suspicious of Windows because I don't know what it internally does (I don't have access to its code)...
With this post I'm not saying that Linux is better than Windows nor the opposite. Just that people have to be objetive and be able to reason why this or that OS is free or not...
