it's only "forced" if you use Windows Update or enable Automatic Updates. If you avoid those things, you can continue living with your old version and quit complaining.
I doubt there's any other way for Microsoft to force an update unless it's via their update service. They can't connect to your PC whenever they want and tell it to install SP2.
