yep there is no way to fix this problem unless Gmail itself change how they use the pop3 protocol
, you actually can determine how many new emails you have if you have remembered the last number that plus reported
. Just a simple maths problem of:

Number that Plus reports - Previous Number that plus reported!
This will tell you how many are new
just remember that after you send an email plus will add one to the amount of new emails you have recieved
.
If you really could be bothered
, when the number gets too high, you can go into gmail's pop3 settings page and then set gmail to ""Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on" which will reset the amount of new emails plus reports back down to 0 until you send or recieve an email
