O.P. RE: Nvidia 7800GTX (G70) Revealed
ahh mate.. your confused there
the NV40 / Nv50 / GL70 all do 64bit FP / 128bit FP
its a bit confusing, i only recently learnt how it works myself
64bit FP actually is for 16bp Pixel Shaders.. and 128b FP is for 32bp pixel shaders
even the FX series had 128b FP
ATI uses true precision which is 24bit in MS DX standards
Nvidia capitalised on the notion that not all shader paths would need the true precision and so they made the 16bit half precision and the 32bit full precision
the reason they did this is becoz 24 isn't a viable number when doing shading, which they found out when Dx first introduced 24bit true colour,.. which didn't last long
Nvidias first attempt, ie the FX series was a near failure as the core wasn't strong enough and didn't have enough Pixel Pipelines to stand upagainst atis 9600/9700/9800
and sony did ask Nvidia to give them the most powerful gpu,. but as if they are gunna give them the greatest gpu ever
at the time it was. but nvidia have done alot in the last few months and the GL70 (7800) is the result
the RSX engine was and still is a Hybrid design of the Nv50/GL70, and the reason for this is becoz when sony asked for it they were still researching what they could add to the next gpu
as such the gl70 took a lil longer then usual to complete but it still has more features over the RSX
but,.. only time will tell, to who has the right info
