RE: want to keep older version, can I?
May I again strongly note thay there are reasons why some old versions don't work anymore or why there are updates being made!!!
People constantly complain about bugs, things not working, constantly worry about security and what not. They install all sorts of (crap) firewalls, virusscanners and other anti-stuff, but they don't want to update a simple product and/or install the latest bugfixes of Windows...?!?
Updates exist because they fix (sometimes big) security holes. You can patch out all the version numbers you like, the point is that this is NOT a proper "fix" or a proper thing todo and will only cause more harm!
Specifically for MSN Messenger there is also the issue of compatibility with the protocol and servers which are used. Old versions will simply NOT contain the newer protocols needed for the proper workings of Messenger.
Not to mention that eventually you WILL need to update as the older protocols will not be supported anymore at all.
