Thats quiet common actually due to the way the signal is sent you are sometimes better to be further away than closer.
The signal I beleive is sent out like a radar pulse and this is why black spots are created - one beings near the router itself - I will try to find a diagram to explain what I mean - I'm not very good with explanations.
You have the same set up as me.
