The registry doesn't have anything todo with it.
No. I know that the display picture path is not stored in the registry. However, there is an item in preferences that says "Show my display picture and allow others to see it". Since most Messenger preference entries are saved in the registry, disabling this in the registry may be able to remove it. However, I have not checked that this registry key exists, and you'd need to find a way to refresh that entry (possibly by just setting it to another file).
