We all know the Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field that sheilds us from most of the sun's radiation. What you might not know is that the magnetic poles we call north and south have a nasty habit of swapping places every 750,000 years or so - and right now we're about 30,000 years overdue. Scientists have noted that the poles are drifting apart roughly 20-30kms each year, much faster than ever before, which points to a pole-shift being right around the corner. While the pole shift is underway, the magnetic field is disrupted and will eventually disappear, sometimes for up to 100 years. The result is enough UV outdoors to crisp your skin in seconds, killing everything it touches.
It is true that the poles are swapping and that a lot of UV will come through to Earth as there will be no magnetic field. The problem with this statement is that it is going to take
HEAPS longer than that for them to be at a level that we will notice. Furthermore the magnetic field will decrease slowly so it is my belief that through evolution throughout that time we will be more equipped to deal with the extra UV and stuff, the main problem stemming from migratory animals who will not be able to judge their direction at the time of the no poles. Don't be too worried though because there have been tests already to show that birds at least will after a short period of time be able to go back to a normal cycle and direction of where they are meant to be(that was done by just making a big change to the poles on the bird, like reversing it all at once and it still worked).
